To Solidify the Mist
Chapter Thirty-One

We started the march the next morning toward Mochsha’s estate. While all the men assured Orintious that they were able to handle regular action, he felt it better if they were not stressed. He however confided in Heratin and me that he simply did not trust Decholl. He thus wanted an easy march to assure everyone was fresh should battle again be necessary.

Chapter Thirty

As I was helping Nerframe onto the craft, I looked out on the water and had an idea. Orintious was right there directing his men. I thus did not need to go far to mention my thought.

“Here, take my sword.”

“Why, Vernallor? You think you can handle a weapon of my size?”

The lighthouse keeper did not mind allowing the ladies into the stone building, but he said there was no way he could provide shelter for all us men. Ochally and Minchell would however not leave their masters, and Mochsha would not go without at least one of her brothers. The lighthouse keeper relented to allowing us siblings with our servants while telling the soldiers to find what shelter they could in the small barn.

Chapter Twenty-Eight

I awoke to some laughter, and rose to see a soldier doing a dance with Nerframe. It seemed that she was having trouble with the female steps, but there was a smile on her face as she worked with the men to learn them. As we began our day, Nerframe displayed a very positive attitude about being a lady, although some laughter did sound as she had learned other behaviors that were different for a female.

Chapter Twenty-Seven

We left the next morning before sunrise. Even at the early hour the birds lifted as a single flock and kept the sky dark by their presence over us. Our destination was on the other side of the city, so while the lights from above were blocked we could determine our way from points of brilliance from others also needing to see. As we went through the community, the early hour made recognizing a certain figure rather easy.

Chapter Twenty-Six

We discussed the conversation with Orintious upon finding him. He listened to what we said. I believe he spoke about the condition of his men simply to buy himself time to think on what the viscount said, as after trading some comments with Heratin Orintious changed the topic of conversation.

The estate we gained for our rest was a nice mansion, although not nearly large enough for the soldiers. Still, they had a clear field with facilities that provided them with warm water. Considering that they gained the liberty to enjoy the town, as I stayed outside sparring with Orintious I gained the impression that most soldiers would not be spending much time about the mansion.

As we left the bank, Mochsha said, “I always wondered where Father gained our names. He told me that he gained the names along with us – that he did not make them up. I guess what I learned verifies that. My name was Mochsha. I wonder if it was the name of a relative.”

I suggested, “Maybe there will be portraits about the estate.”

“Orintious, you could visit the estate of your father and possibly see some of your relatives.”

We did camp by the road the next evening. Orintious came to the decision that we were going into town, so it would be best to let those of the town know. Just as the soldiers had been acting graciously to assure proper acceptance by any fairies, their attitude continued toward those on the road to assure that the locals understood we had no intentions of causing them trouble.
