The Depth of the Mists
Chapter Seventeen

I felt the evidence was clear, but went ahead and let those around me hear my list of facts. “There’s nothing here, Sterrig. There is no stench of dead, decaying bodies below. There is no taint in the air of trees, dirt, or even purishorten. Except for a slight angle to the drop, where we are is no better than where we were up top.”

“I will bet you that we notice something after the next descent.”

“I hope not.” Before he could ask, I went ahead and supplied the answer. “If you feel we are getting close to the bottom, you would climb on down.”

“Well, we made this far.”

“Things should get easier.”

I started ranting on how things should not get easier. I pointed out the problems with our reality. The presence of the dragon and how it had attempted to kill us I felt only supported my case. While the mercenaries expressed concern, Sterrig kept his features blank throughout my rant.

“Safety, Sterrig. This reality we are moving to is not static. Need to make some preparations to help Father come to our rescue. Oh, yes, since we are starting this in his yard, Dechapper gets a share of the treasure.”

“That is why I stopped working with you, Orintious. You get everyone involved and split the treasure with them.”

“And yet I am the one with money.”

I again nodded, but felt the end of a tentacle tap me on the nose as Father added, “Sterrig never listened to me. I cannot say that purishorten will actually help him, but I am glad that he is taking on a mission of this type and not things like he has been doing. If you get a chance, Vernallor, repeat my words to him.”

“Simply saying them and having him listen are two different things.”

“If he is not going to listen then there is no value in saying it.”

I had to ask, “You know what it means?”

Sterrig had the look that he did not want to say, but as his brother he could think of no reason to stay silent. “Sure. Itchy lake to the south.”

“What you do with an itch? You scratch it. South – back. Lake? Well, that gets obscure. Anyway, it means ‘scratch my back and I’ll scratch yours.’ That was all you were telling that evil book. You were saying that if he would help you that you would help him.”

“And how do you get back up?”

“Don’t know if I want to come back up. Listen, I love all of you. Think well of me.”

We watched in silence as he moved to the portal. No sooner did he disappear than did Orintious activate his medallion to call Father. I sensed the sudden rush of power before a portal opened enabling our tentacled parent to come to us.

“Glad to know you, Nerframe. It’s just my luck that the damn portal will fade away, but I need to think on this. I am however claiming this project. If I need help, Vernallor, I’ll let you know.”

We all watched as he walked out. I believe those who were planning to go found it strange that Sterrig left without telling anyone good-bye. After he walked out the door, Father spoke I believe to calm the rest of us.

Lekarry said, “I have been told that purishorten is like salt. When it gets on a person, it hurts and itches, but at the end of a painful period they have been cleansed of all unrighteousness. In our history there are stories of people being forced to work in mines who turn to preaching, and it was said that they encountered a vein of purishorten.”

Sterrig asked, “It did not purify the metal or anything like that? That is what I am thinking. I can buy impure gold cheap, then use purishorten to purify the metal enabling me to resell it at a much higher value.”

As I passed through the front room, I saw Nerframe and commanded, “Go stick a piece of bread down Sterrig’s throat.” Strangely, she rushed out to the porch and tried to do just that, having Sterrig sputtering while asking the house elf was she was doing with me answering, “Keeping your damn mouth quiet while I read.”

He replied, “Listen, that’s not for pleasure!”

“Then pay me. Right now!” I saw the heads of Orintious’ men turn to me as I added, “If you’re not going to let me enjoy the book, pay me.”

“Certainly, Lord Galabur. I however know that you have a place far above me.”

“No. You actually have many more lives trusting in your guidance than me.”

The compliments continued to pass back and forth as introductions were made. The baron had met all of us, except Father, but went through certain procedures as this was our first visit to his home. We also had not met his family. Many more comments passed between us, but the baron did move things along to the business that brought us.
