The Depth of the Mists
Chapter Thirty

“We’re doomed,” I worked to voice, “but I promised. I really did promise.”

“Promised what, Vernallor?”

I stood while saying, “Load up with gold. If things go bad, at least we should leave with something.”

“What? I’m ready to go home.”

“Without the treasure?”

His shocked expression had me relax. While I did not doubt he had something on him, I could see that he understood to load himself with more before trying anything. Sterrig moving back to the stairs had me feel relief that there was still time to solve this challenge, although seeing the expression on Theria’a face had me realize that I would have help.

Chapter Twenty-Eight

Of course none of the gold removed was thrown away. We thus had an amount of wealth before stepping among a grand expanse of the metal. Rushing to get even more gold, men began to cry. A few needed to be restrained as they began to beat themselves, most with their hands with a few repeatedly sending their heads against one of the containers of the white crystals although a couple tried to inflict harm with their own weapons. Those of us with some degree of control over ourselves wondered what was going on even as we looked over the ground covered with gold.

Chapter Twenty-Seven

“Dreams of men can be strange things, Vernallor. They can get even stranger with a group like I have. What I do is not normal, Vernallor. Hell, I’m not normal, and some of my men have their own unusual stories. The wealth we saw is having all the men think on their dreams. I really see no evidence of purishorten. Keep these men thinking on the reality of our situation, and we might live to see our dreams.”

I heard one mercenary say, “We need you to commit to this, Theria.”

“I’m not suicidal,” she spewed back. “I’ll do what is necessary.”

“Yeah, I heard women tell me that before.”

Sterrig had one hand go to the bowl, but another reached as if to grab a crystal before it dissolved in the water flowing around us. An expression of finding comfort crossed his features. He then took off with the bowl to where he could scream at the lady.

“THERE WILL BE MORE!” She spun, but he kept talking. “More gold, but also more purishorten. Whatever you are attempting to refuse or deny, there will be more of this stuff. Here! Take the bowl! Leave!”

“That’s not the life I have ever lived, Sterrig. I didn’t believe you knew what you were talking about.”

“But it should be good that you see that I do know.”

“I’m not certain about that.”

As she again started moving off I heard a mercenary say, “Do you think on our next mission we could go after something that has us understand women?”

Chapter Twenty-Three

The one that worked with the lady was shivering as if cold as he said, “That stuff might itself be purishorten for all we know.”

Theria roughly asked, “And what the hell is purishorten supposed to do to you?”

“Purify your soul.”

“Our souls? You really don’t believe that crap, do you?”

Sterrig asked, “Hey, are you saying that you are voting with me? I mean, your plan is just a secondary option should my belief not hold true.”

“That is true. Still, Sterrig, gaining this island was not done easily. Think about how fatigued we might be after adding another channel crossing. My proposal might add another step, but it also gives us a destination that we can make before we collapse from being heavily fatigued.”

Chapter Twenty-One

“Are you saying I lied?”

Evidence could not lie. One however could misread it with the results being a wrong conclusion. Taking off things so I could look at my feet would actually not solve any problem. I however knew to push things with Sterrig, as he would lie hoping others would not challenge his evidence.

I lifted my feet to pull off my boots while saying, “Maybe the changes you noticed are simply from taking a bath.”
