Handle Animal (Cha., General)
Those that dedicate a part of their lives to the care and training of animals will have points allocated to this skill. There are a number of useful reasons to have this skill during a game. Each moderator's own experience with animals will tinge how he handles this skill, but what is below should be reasonable benchmarks.
Taking '10' and '20' is not possible for this skill. Use of this skill either takes a lengthy period or must meet immediate situations.
- Handle a Domestic Animal -- DC10 -- One round to start
This means to command a trained dog, drive a beast of labor, tend to a tired horse, or such action with a beast that knows you or will accept you. This is also the DC for commanding a war mount into battle (note that if the animal refuses, it will then need to be 'pushed').
- 'Push' a Domestic Animal -- DC17 -- One round to start
This means to command a poorly trained dog, drive a tired beast of labor, have a wounded horse carry you, or such action with a beast that knows you or will accept you. This is also the DC for commanding a regular mount into battle or a war mount into battle if it refused on a previous round.
- Rear a Domestic Animal -- DC5 -- 1 Year Usually
This is to raise a normal animal from infancy. The time required depends on the time required for the animal to mature. Moderators will have to determine their own DC for exotic, non-domesticated, or other creature. Note that if you don’t make this DC, then the animal is assumed to have died.
- Teaching a Domestic Animal a Task -- DC15 and up -- Varies
The average time for this act takes two months, although the moderator can make his own ruling. Moderators should base the time allotment and DC according to the complexity of the task and difficulty for the type of animal.
- Get Animal to Act in Spite of Pain -- DC +Damage
This is for preventative damage to accomplish a task, like walk on fire. It should also be applied to a non-war animal that suffers damage in combat.
- Work with an Unknowing or Unfriendly Animal -- DC +10
Yes, it helps to get to know an animal before training it.
- Work with a Wild Animal -- DC +10 -- Time at Least Half Again
- Work with a Beast -- DC +15 -- Time at Least Half Again
- Work with a Magical Beast -- DC +25 -- Time at Least Half Again
Retries can be allowed depending on the situation and the ruling of the moderator. An animal that had been showing promise should not suddenly develop an eternal hatred. Failure should however be considered some break in the relationship of the character and the animal, so an increase in DC should be normal.
Special items do help with this skill, even if such are special foods.
