The use of this spells allows the caster to check an area for the presence of magic portals (spell is Ethereal unless the portal moves through Astral plane). If an area is studied for 1 round (considered flat-footed for combat purposes with a need to make a Concentration check if take any damage), the caster will learn the sizes and locations of any portals in the area. Once a portal is found, it can be studied for further facts. Note that only one portal can be studied at a time.
Each round that a portal is examined, one property of the portal can be revealed. The moderator should reveal any facts in the following order:
1) Any specific circumstance governing the portal's use -. a) Specific times when it can be activated. b) If the portal opens randomly, and whether it can be used now. c) Whether or not the portal is functioning normally. 2) Any specific information about the portal's passage. a) If a set location or if variable b) Whether the portal is one-way or two-way. c) Whether special rules about transmission (ex. Living beings go one place and objects another) 3) What key or command word is needed to activate the portal. 4) Any special unusual properties apply to the portal.
The moderator is free to demand a Knowledge(Planes) check (DC17 or level of the one that created the portal) in order to reveal any property. If a check is not made, the character may try again next round or have the moderator move on to the next property. Note that if time runs out, the caster may cast this spell again and have the moderator move on to properties not yet revealed (reflecting the study of the caster).
