Being Found in Elfland
Chapter Eighteen: Part Two
Castle Warlock

Charlie showed surprise upon coming into my room and seeing me wear the roc-feather undergarment. She however asked about the dress that I was going to wear. I not only answered that question, but told her which dress of hers to wear. She did mention being surprised to see me in the undergarment as she helped tighten the laces, and I gave her my reasoning.

“I don’t want our hosts to think of you as needing support to appear as a lady.”

“Is that a compliment?”

“What?”

“One lady telling another lady that she looks like a lady.”

There are always new things for people to learn about each other.

Chapter Eighteen: Part One
Castle Warlock

...
I began giving Charlie more duties at the meals. She did them, although looked at me as if to ask if she was performing the actions in a proper fashion. That caused me to give her more chores. She did them. I knew that a question was coming, but it did not come until all duties were concluded at the end of the day.

“Are you happy?”

“Happy? There is nothing to be happy about.”

“But I did everything that you asked me to do.”

Adapting usually takes more than simply surviving a situation.

Being Found in Elfland
Chapter Seventeen: Part Two
A Road Previously Traveled

Instead of being worried at seeing the tree ripped from the ground before us, Charlie drew her sword while yelling at me. “Stay behind the tree!”

Sounded like stupid advice to me, so I finished loading the magazine, put it in the pistol, then fired. I had hit the monster in the heart, other places in the chest unless their heart happened to be there instead, then at the head. I figured that I still had one vital area left to try, so I fired off a bullet.

Surviving is sometimes difficult, but other parts of life need attention as well.

Being Found in Elfland
Chapter Seventeen: Part One
A Road Previously Traveled

...
“Tough Link did not go that way, but the monk led him on another route due to the horse.”

Sir Titurel replied, “We shall not travel by the stairs either, because our mounts could not handle it.”

“Have you ever climbed it or gone down it?”

“Verily. Tis the straight path.”

Knowledge of a route never includes everything there is to know.

Chapter Sixteen: Complete
The Elfin Monastery

...br>
Finally reaching the crest of our journey, I looked down to see a massive stone edifice. I actually felt relief in seeing our destination for the day. Hearing shouts and a ringing of a bell however caused me be concerned for who lived in the building.

Michechio was already waving by the time that I recognized it was her name that everyone was saying. Seeing elves dressed in robes suddenly had me recognize the location. I turned to the puppet to ask if this was the place where Tough Link and Softie found her, and she verified that it was.

It is nice when one story lets you revisit places from a previous tale.

Being Found in Elfland
Chapter Fifteen: Part Two
Through Dangerous Territory

...
“I am not poor, Titurel, and you have been paying for our lodging.”

“I am but thy protector, Lady Shinny. This is a mission for thou women.”

I took the heavier pouch, and threw it to the knight as I said, “Then pay for our lodging out of this. When you need more, let me know. Right now this mission is running at a profit, so no reason for any of us to spend their own funds.”

It takes certain circumstances to force conversations on important topics.

Being Found in Elfland
Chapter Fifteen: Part One
Through Dangerous Territory

...
As Charlie turned to move back to the horses, she looked to Sir Titurel to ask, “You don’t stop at the shrines?”

“No. I face enough heathen practices regularly. To actually take part will tarnish crowns that I desire to be burnished”

“Well, I have made my living by selling. I know many that have condemned me to Hell simply because they believed that I worship money. That is not true, and I don’t believe these fairies are demonic either.”

“They are not creatures of God, so I will have no dealing with them.”

It is strange how different people react to things of fantasy and folklore.

Conversations

...
Knight Titurel speaking --
“Verily, tis not that much further up the road. Thou women should enjoy the rest however, as the next day is hard and we will need to make camp along the road.”

My husband asked, “Won’t that put us in goblin territory?”

“Nay, fair Charlie. We will ride hard so as not to force you to suffer at their hand again. That however does not mean that other threats from this land might not try to harm us.”

Things get personal as the ladies get to know each other.

The Clock of a Woman

...
“No offense to Titurel, but it is your mission. While he will surely be trustworthy, don’t be scared of having him explain his route. If he does not see things as you do, give him your own directions.”

“I am not one to do that, Tough Link. I am used to going into wild territories with a man.” I looked to Titurel as I said, “It will be Charlie that might have her own mind.”

The knight replied, “No offense to thy husband, Lady Shinny, but she is a lady as well. I will have to abide by her directions as well.”

Plans help, but never reveal the unknown.

Being Found in Elfland
Chapter Twelve: Complete
Things Will be All Right

...
I barely heard the knock on the door. All the men however rose. I would have, but I instead patted the leg of my husband to let her know that she was presently not obligated to stand. Her eyes stated that she had not felt such a desire, and again I noticed an expression of concern that I knew to be her worried that her change was at a deeper level than what could be restored. I smiled at her, then turned my attention to the door wondering who had arrived.

The lady that stepped through appeared human, although of a very light frame. Her dark hair fell from a hat of silver to cover her back. The orange-red clothes fell loose around her barely revealing any of her body when she moved. I did not recognize her from anything Tough Link said in his report, but the men knelt as if they knew full well of her identity.

Directions are nice, if the destination is where you want to go.
