Being Found in Elfland
Chapter Three: Complete
My Husband Adjusts

...
The city that I had pointed out was across the opening into the alcove and quite a distance further on. As Tough Link had stated, it sat near the coast, which made it easily seen although a number of miles away. My husband now pointed to it while asking his next question.

“Why don’t we head there?” As if his question needed a rationale, he added, “For the night.”

I thought the explanation was obvious. “Because we would have to swim. Tough Link had mermaids help him across the inlet. Also, however, Tough Link had to move all the way around from Nemarble. I am hoping to get to Ronice in this direction. It should be more direct.”

Different directions means different threats, but also different people.

Being Found in Elfland
Chapter Two: Complete
The Search for a Bridge

...
“I however plan on getting lost, Captain. I however promise to wait for my husband before I do that. There should be nothing wrong with me getting lost with my husband.”

The man looked at me strangely. I could tell from the glance that he was a family man, and had experience with dealing with ladies. While the words that he said sounded official, I could tell that he had hopes that they would be taken in a more personal manner.

“Mrs. Southard, I would rather that no one else gets lost.”

Even small problems can present major obstacles.

The fantastic sequel to 'Being Lost in Elfland.'
Being Found in Elfland
Chapter One: Complete
After Reading the Report

I cried as I finished the document. Luckily, I had already made some phone calls. I had cleared my schedule. With tears in my eyes, I put all the pages back together in the box in which it had come. I then clicked to have my phone dial a number that I knew so well I probably could have punched in the digits faster than the electronics. I could not help but continue to cry as I listened to the dial tones.

“Charles. Come on, Charles, pick up.”

“Shinny, what’s up?”

I did not stand up, because I was already standing. I sat down and wiped my eyes. I was not scared of him hearing me cry, but I was scared that I would soon hear him crying.

“Tough Link found our boy.”

And so begins another excursion through Bernard Sleigh's "An Ancient Mappe of Fairyland."

Being Lost in Elfland
Chapter Forty: Part Two
To Save the King

Football was a game of seconds. Modern warfare played out in short units of time as well. I knew moments as a cop that weighed heavily in whether a culprit was convicted or released. Only the search for Chad had taken time. Every other job I had resulted in a need for quick decisions.

King Nezarraine was about to die. Suminex had managed to get the monarch in the proper position, and he quickly worked his plan to bring it to a successful conclusion. To save the king, someone had to immediately act in the proper manner.

Just for note: yes, I really planned it this way.

Being Lost in Elfland
Chapter Forty: Part One
To Save the King

Again I made the ascent. This time I did not have Michechio to worry about. I also found myself feeling at ease that Chad had been rescued. Physically, I know that the second climb was no easier, but mentally I found it much less taxing.

I reached a level section above the cave openings, then again studied my situation. I could barely make out the battle to the west, but I could clearly see the movements of those behind the front line. Full support for my suspicion that the boliauns fought to prevent a different advance could be made out. I looked to the rise of rocky ground, then moved back to assure that none could spot me before donning the robe of darkness.

Tough Link puts himself on the front line of the battle.

Being Lost in Elfland
Chapter Thirty-Nine: Complete
And Chad is Found

...
The other termite fairies fled. I had my eyes on them. With one opponent down I had shifted my focus to prepare for the next antagonist. I really had not worried about the one that I slammed against the rock. I believe the other ones however noticed the squish of its comrade, and fled to avoid a similar fate.

As I wiped the black remains from my palm, I spoke to Michechio, “Keep that cloak around you. It might be hot, but the termite fairies do not seem to notice you.”

“Should I put on more perfume?”

Michechio might just be a puppet, but she does help.

Being Lost in Elfland
Chapter Thirty-Eight: Complete
March Forward

I awoke to sounds of alarm. I turned to see Michechio donning her armor. Since she was supposed to wear her armor today, I did not get alarmed by her actions, but I did begin moving quickly due to the activities of others.

As I put on my clothes, I noticed something flaky in the air. I stood to catch some of the odd pieces of matter. Seeing fish scales, I looked to see how far along the puppet was in becoming dressed.

“Stay out of sight, Michechio. We have termite fairies.”

The final battle begins.

Being Lost in Elfland
Chapter Thirty-Seven: Complete
Others of Importance

...
I woke with a start the next morning as I heard, “And what group of lazy scoundrels is this? Could not manage to travel the few miles necessary to gain a decent bed and good food?”

The man sat straight on his horse with his lance at the ready. He did not wear armor however. He appeared younger than Percival or Auodos, although clearly wore clothes similar to them with symbols of the cross all over his attire.

I replied, “Our mission is to the north. We went to bed wondering about the courage of those that cowered in a rear position.”

“Ho-ho. Thee must be Tough Link.”

A few more legendary figures are met as all prepare for the final battle.

Being Lost in Elfland
Chapter Thirty-Six: Complete
The Search for Donkey Cabbages

...
The fairy appeared male, although the light form surrounded in thick green clothing could have been female, as the tiny voice did give me the impression of someone of that gender speaking. “Yes, but the men that come to claim the cabbages each year take them all. They plow the land thinking that is the reason that they grow back.”

I heard the statement, and made a conclusion. “Ah, so there are fairies associated with those cabbages.”

With a slightly accusatory tone, the fairy replied, “You would not end their existence?”

Tough Link begins to feel the jitters as he realizes that he is actually getting close to the final battle.

Being Lost in Elfland
Chapter Thirty-Five: Complete
Horned Children

I had seen the distant movement of what I considered people to the south. There appeared to be a fog in that direction where I knew Lake Elfinmere to be. Maybe I had considered that something was wrong, but I rode with the knights really only considering the sight to be something more interesting than just watching the movement of the horses.

Michechio giggled before saying, “You think that they would have learned from their lesson long ago.”

“What?” I asked turning my head to look at her.

“They are again attempting to catch a termite fairy in a bucket.”

What I found strange about this chapter is how normal it felt.
