Wild Life - Animal Companions for Anyone
Posted by Atlan on Friday, November 21, 2003 (14:13:23) (680 reads) 1 comment |
WotC has publishe a new feat that allows for all characters to get an animal companion (or another one if they already qualify).
While it is different from the way a druidic animal companion is handled the feat should be discussed among the group and with the DM (as also stated in the preface of the article) - it is mainly meant optional like the leadership feat.
You can find the feat here:

Chapter Six - Part 1
The man was surrounded by guards, but not because of any crime that he committed. The elven king had commanded that if Petham was recognized that he was to be treated with all respect. When the witch identified himself at the gate to the royal castle, the troops only asked him what he desired. Petham told them he wanted an escort to the king.
When Dureillorshin was informed of Petham's presence, the monarch gave an order for the witch to be brought to the private chamber where he was presently relaxing. Such was truthfully a needless command, because the guards were heading in his direction with the important witch. The messenger thus simply stepped out of the king’s quarters and waited for the soldiers, then waved them on inside when they arrived.
Facts are dealt with and decisions are made. Truthfully, this is a set-up for the next couple of installments, but that does not mean that what is done here is not important.

Why we all should play text based vs. graphic MUDs
Posted by Roy on Thursday, November 13, 2003 (14:25:46) (1439 reads) 1 comment |
With the increasing popularity of multi-person online games, some would consider text-based gaming to be a thing of the past. Why, then, do so many keep a loyal following and enjoy a regular influx of newcomers? Without the intense graphics of real-time strategy games and places like Everquest, there are facets which satisfy a wide range of players better than anything else.
Many Multi-User Dungeons (MUDs) adhere to a particular theme in their areas and objects and even their character names. There are MUDs devoted to a futuristic theme in the world of Shadowrun, there are others that are purely fantasy based loosely upon TSR's Forgotten Realms, and more which suit other themes. Chances are, if the genre you are interested in has been popular somewhere, there is a MUD that has been created in its image.
While many things are defined for you, the subtleties are left to your imagination. How many times, have you gone to see a movie and walked out afterwards shaking your head in disappointment because it wasn't what you envisioned? No matter how elaborate a heavy-graphics game can get, the subtleties which truly make things come alive just can't be provided for you. A friend sighs - contentedly, or with regret? A graphical environment, by necessity, makes presumptions upon what a given thing will or should look like, and often you're left with no choice but to accept the designer's vision. The beauty of the text-based environment is that the imagery is entirely up to your imagination. A dragon can look how you feel it should look, rather than a rendered image which you may disagree with.
Note: This seems to be as much an advert for TorilMUD as a review of MUDs in general. However I believe it makes several valid points and the TorilMud website is well laid out and worth a looksee. Thema.

Chapter Five - Part 2
Clark was not happy about the spread on that release of his sling. He had a serious expression on his face as he walked up to a tree to pick up one of the stones that had hit the trunk, because he was considering how to better control his shots. His face did not register surprise when a man stepped out of the underbrush, but his eyes focused on the stranger as his mind switched from considering his use of the sling. The human man was about Clark's height wearing black cloth clothes with a black leather vest and black boots. A black cloth hood covered most of his head.
"Wh’t aryE duing Abut thu cUntryseed?"
That was a close approximation of what the man said. It really was not the choice of words or dialect that worked to prevent the three from easily grasping that they understood. They were from a rural part of America, so were used to uncultured pronunciations of English. They also had experience working with the general public and traveling to distant lands, so were familiar with a variety of phrasings by those who did not speak English as their primary language. What caught them by surprise was that with new bodies on a new world they fully expected to need to learn a new language.
As our heroes survive and learn, the opposition starts gaining the data necessary for them to focus on strategy.

For all who thought that kobolds can be more dangerous than cannon fodder WotC has published the statistics of several powerful Kobolds that should challenge more than a few PCs that held them in contempt before (CR 4, 7 + 11) .
Besides that you can also find a paragraph about typical tactics that make even normal kobolds at least a bit more dangerous if not deadly to some groups.
The article can be found here:
