Chapter Nine - Part 2
Oliver woke as the elven lady was stirring the oatmeal. He was glad to see Clark sleeping, and quietly moved off to start his day. His efforts were wasted however, because the half-elf did awake. Whether the morning air, the sounds of the fire, the smell of the oatmeal, or the movement of his companions, his slumber came to an end.
"Steve, how is the book?" he croaked as he sat up.
"It is better than nothing. I do want to thank you for it."
"It fell from a window." Her eyes focused on him, so he knew to keep speaking. "Listen, I feel certain that I killed a man last night. It is a long story, but I do not want to go out again."
A major discussion occurs along with a fight that sets the stage for another major turning point with our heroes.

Chapter Nine - Part 1
He could not do it. Clark sat the book down by the elven lady, but could not bring himself to lay down beside her. He was too tired to do anything, but he felt that the work he did tonight deserved some physical recompense. Just a little warmth, the feel of a woman's body, the smell ... he sat down next to the slumbering lady confused. He could not do it to his brother, but knew that it needed to happen. Stephen's form required perfume, a brush, make-up, and probably more stuff than he or she knew about. He thought that he had taken enough money to put their lives at ease for some time, but now believed that he had stolen only enough to bring some normalcy to their lives for the moment. He had promised not to steal anymore, but suddenly felt a need to go back into town.
Events are not slowing down. Major events are beginning to occur with our heroes. This chapter ties things together so that what comes will make sense.

Chapter Eight - Part 3
Clark dressed himself completely in the black garments taken from the assassin and headed back into town. He had a job to do. There was no resentment that he was the one to do this deed. He was ready to do something.
He had been in enough houses. As a plumber, he was often called to enter a dwelling and fix a serious problem. A common argument between him and Stephen was who had been in more homes. His brother's claim that his picture on people's television was just as important of an invite never won many points, but it could raise the noise level. Stephen however could not claim the skill of moving about in a person's private sanctuary with complete trust. Clark felt that he was now going to be in the wrong for only going into a home to take money, but promised himself that he would fix whatever leaky faucet he found.
The first major turning point in the story finally occurs. Things start to build as certain decisions start to be made.

"Dear god, man! Shoot straight!" A large, balding man howled in almost true pain. He pointed a shaking finger at a man only a year his younger, and with a full head of hair still. "You asked me to make you a good archer; how am I supposed to DO that if you won't even TRY to shoot straight?"
The little man drew himself up, still only coming up to the bigger man's chin. "I do try, Namir, and you know I shoot straighter than most."

Tales of the Raibi2

Then, as the the wind blew a particularly strong gust of wind at the fire, the man's reign over it broke; everything seemed to happen at once as the fire broke loose, revealing itself to be a demon. The village scrambled for shelter, many screaming in pain and fear as the demon reached for them. The man who had been trying to hold the demon was lying on the ground, dead; the man and the pigmi dragon on the hillside had vanished, and were seen coming to the demon at a quick jog. No one paid them any heed, nor the dozens of other pigmi dragons that began to appear in the night sky. The rainbow of colors dazzled whoever looked upon them, but they did not think of them, assuming they were the demon's children.
Note: Again a bit short & sweet with an unsophisticated writing style. I'm nevertheless keen on seeing how the tale develops. For me I'd prefer longer chapters. Your opinions may differ. Don't forget you can add your comments too. Tell the author what you think.

Chapter Eight - Part 2
This was not his idea of a city, but Clark was having a hard time not feeling at home. He noticed the lack of multi-roomed tenant houses in the previous towns, but the populations there were so small that he did not consider them a necessary part of the scenery. This town was large, and he kept expecting to see squalor. There was a diversity in the quality of housing, but none appeared to be the results of planned civic humiliation. Some people just took better care of their residences than others.
There were poorly kept sections, but they seemed more of a reflection of those who lived there and not their quality of life. Both times that he had a home, each of which was simply given to the bank because his wife did not live with him long enough to build any equity, he kept the property looking decent. He had neighbors though who considered yard work something one did on sober weekends. Oliver's yard always looked good, but he was retired and considered the work to be a part of keeping his wife's memory alive. Eric would probably have eventually done the same, because his wife often worked in their yard. Stephen kept his yard mowed, and was proud of himself for doing that. His wife considered the untidy appearance of the yard to be just one more thing to fuss at him about. Clark went about looking at the small farm plots, stalls where various animals were kept, and the conditions of the various homes and assigning personalities to the families who lived there.
Final points are established before a major situation erupts. By the way, yes, to those that notice the two chapters here were at the end of the last installment. Somebody pointed them out, and I have made certain to put them where they belong.

Tales of the Raibi

The fire the village had built could be seen for miles. It did not have a smoke, nor was the flames yellow, orange, or red; nay, they were blue. Surrounding this odd fire upon the plains was the village itself, every man, woman, and child silent as they stared at a single man.
This man was, indeed, not of the dark-skinned people surrounding him. His skin was a pale, creamy white, a startling shade against his rich black eyes. He stared silently at the violet-blue fire, his arms held as if heavy blocks. His short white hair did not move in the steady breeze around him nor did the fire. Everything was held still, as if frozen in time.
Note: Seems a good opening. But there's hardly enough to wet one's appetite here. As No5 might say. Need more input!

Chapter Eight - Part 1
The men were awake and warming the stew when Stephen returned from the river. She quietly sat down before the fire as her eyes moved back and forth between the men. Both Oliver and Clark could tell by the directness of her actions that she had something to say, and waited for her to say it.
"Do either of you remember the process of transformation? I keep trying to remember the time between standing on the pedestal and standing in the field."
Some details are established as things continue to build towards a major situation.
