History of Mardon Castle
Chapter Ten
Part 2
Even next to the fire, Axiste felt his body growing cold. Without the surrounding warmth of the sun, his blood did not retain any heat. His son and the lad’s friend were already asleep. The constant movement of the humans bothered Axiste however, so he did what he could to keep his body active.
Hearing shouts of jubilation caused him to look to the excavated hole. Something had been driving the humans, and he hoped that the cheers of success would have them finally abate the intensity of their operation. Knowing that whatever had been discovered would probably only give the humans a reason to keep working, Axiste forced his body to move over and see if he could determine what had been found.
Rewards tend to come to those that do the work.

History of Mardon Castle
Chapter Ten
Part 1
...
She moved near a sentry. He did not respond except to look at her. Terniff did not say anything, but drew her sword. It was enough to get the man to speak.
“We picked a good spot to camp, Lady Terniff. Any further, and we would have had to fight swamp serpents.”
“They are good to eat.”
The sentry chuckled, then said, “Yes, but a lot of trouble to kill. Also, a lot of meat, and we do not number that many.”
“Then I will pick a small one.”
Probably not an installment that you expected.

History of Mardon Castle
Chapter Nine
Part 3
Ellish moved into the castle slightly uncertain about what he should do. The building reflected what he considered the change in his life. He had spent his career working in and around this fortress, but only now could he consider himself a part of this edifice. As a soldier he had slept out in the barracks, and that had been his home away from home all his life. Rising in rank he had moved to better and better rooms on the castle grounds, but only now as a knight did he actually have his berth in the castle proper. It actually felt slightly improper for him to consider this building as somewhere he could relax, and even pausing to consider what he should do he felt uneasy with a worry that someone might reprimand him for goofing off.
“My knight, Ellish, I am so glad to see you.”
He had not jumped at the voice, but his body did twitch with a strength that he considered the lady did notice. Looking at Nalisha, he only saw a polite smile on her face. Ellish however spoke quickly to assure that she did not see any fault in him.
Ellish finishes saying his 'Good-byes.'

History of Mardon Castle
Chapter Nine
Part 2
...
Helshain was approached as he saw the real destruction to the marsh. Magically created stone attempted to hold back water and mud from refilling an excavated volume. The soft dirt was being kept outside the walls, although the water that seeped between cracks was not clean. Smoke spewed from machines working to expel the liquid that did gather at the lower parts of the pit. The druid looked to those around him wondering who was going to first dare his wrath.
A man with a mustache that stretched across his face, neither ascending to become part of sideburns or descending to become part of a beard said, "I don't know if you remember me, Lord Helshain, but I am Kaervel. You taught me how to recognize roots. That knowledge kept me and others alive during the war, especially the winters."
The druid remembered a studious lad who laughed when he fell into mud, "If you are hungry enough, you will eat anything."
"I did not say that your knowledge kept my belly full, but that it kept me alive. Others who were not so discerning felt pain and often died."
One of the original scenes in my head that caused me to take an interest in this story.

History of Mardon Castle
Chapter Nine
Part 1b
...
Ellish glared at Renwyn while saying, “I know the kevalla. I know Terniff. I can go join them and hear what I will, then interject my simple question at a proper moment.”
The man pushed on his chest while saying, “You can wait.”
The act could not be allowed to go unanswered. Ellish really did not want to fight with Renwyn, but saw on his features that he was prepared to make a scene. Feeling that it would be a contest between equals, Ellish stepped up silently daring Renwyn to push again. When the act was made, Ellish had prepared himself and smiled as he stood firm. His pleasant expression however dropped upon seeing Renwyn cock back a fist.
Ah, yes, men will be men.

History of Mardon Castle
Chapter Nine
Part 1a
...
As with most castles that Ellish knew about, it had to be more than a sturdy fortress for the nobility. In case of a siege by a foreign power, it had to act as a complete social system assuring some comfort as well as survival for all the citizens. What someone entering the castle grounds saw was a nice landscaped front blocked by the stables and barracks on one side and a herb garden surrounded by a high stone fence on the other. Going through the barracks, one could find the busy and active metal smiths. Through the stables were corrals for a variety of animals. Going through the castle one could find doors to other gardens growing a variety of food plants. While everything appeared peaceful as he moved across the courtyard, Ellish suspected that dangerous secrets were being hidden.
He spoke to more soldiers as he moved through the barracks. Some of these had direct knowledge concerning what he had heard mentioned from those at the gate. Moving past the barracks, Ellish spoke to a couple of the master metal smiths who were working in the front of their shops. They verified things that that the regular soldiers had said, as well as simply chatted about family. While he felt that he had heard a number of relevant facts, Ellish opened a metal door between the area for the soldiers and the animals wondering what he would find.
While the smell was strong, the animals appeared calm. One building against the castle proper however was guarded. Knowing that it was not a prison, Ellish moved forward to learn to what purpose it was being used.
While one is leaving, the story continues to advance.

The History of Mardon Castle
Chapter Eight
Part 3
...
The humans now began to spread out. None showed any interest in the old piece of wood that Norvichy held, but all looked around as if attempting to figure out how the ancient castle was positioned beneath them. Axiste jerked his head around however when one of the soldiers blurted something out.
"I wonder... DOWN!"
The difference in the soldiers and hired personnel showed itself in the reaction of the humans. Those that had been to war spun unsheathing their weapons to place themselves in the direction of the speaker. The others did not react so instinctively or with a well practiced move, although most made some action to prepare for trouble. Norvichy and Kaervel had mystical hemispheres of protective energy spread around them. The one to whom the speaking soldier had truly directed his statement however was not a member of the military. He looked to the speaker with an expression of surprise. The features of his face twisted to display horror as a mouth rose from the swampy ground to close around him.
And the work begins.

History of Mardon Castle
Chapter Eight
Part 2
...
Nalisha stood to say, "Lady Terniff, indeed. I believe that my husband knighted the woman."
Most with matters to bring before the viscount stood within the chamber. The couple had however stayed in the hall outside to assure that they could make an impressive entrance. They strode into the room with the metal pieces of their armor glittering from their polish reflecting the various light sources. Color radiated from beneath the metal skin declaring that the couple had the wealth to even dye the protective garments. Outer apparrel and accessories of bright silk helped accentuate the hues next to the bodies of the pair. Tasbirn had forgotten that the colors of Renwyn's home were green and yellow, but as the man advanced he remembered him claiming clothes and gear of those colors after being rescued. A feeling of relief came over the viscount in seeing his knight wearing the red and blue of Mardon.
Advancing from the stone floor to the carpeted area, Terniff strongly said, "And I am here to assure Tasbirn that I will continue to further his cause." Coming before the thrones, she detached from Renwyn to step even closer to the sturdy adorned chairs before kneeling. "Viscount Tasbirn, I have seen Telelum."
Tasbirn has his own style of authority that I felt needed to be seen.

History of Mardon Castle
Chapter Eight
Part 1
Axiste was worried to see that only humans marched in the force. It worried him more that they traveled with their feet moving in rhythm. This was not a large movement of people, but an organized unit. Having been present as Kaervel hired his workers, Axiste had watched as a number who were not veterans of the recent war were incorporated into the group. Had any kevalla joined, they probably would be walking in step as well. Only humans marched however, and that had Axiste concerned that the humans were going to war.
He did not doubt that the group had no formal plans for battle. The fact that they were solely a human unit would however be considered improperly by kevalla. Axiste feared a coming conflict because he had seen what the veterans could do against an opposing force. Aggression between any adversaries within Mardon were usually simple affairs with the results only determining the initial weight each side had in their favor when entering negotiations. Axiste had seen the veterans however set themselves for true mortal conflict, so worried that an opposing army of kevalla would be slaughtered without any consideration for discussion.
And a battle does occur.

History of Mardon Castle
Chapter Seven
Part 3
...
"I LOVE YOU, TERNIFF!"
She could only stare into the wet darkness as she heard her man laugh. He then shouted out a thanks to Helshain before again screaming out her name a few times. Terniff did not know how to respond, even as she understood that Renwyn was not in pain.
The voice of the kevalla screamed out, "Damn human! Go to bed! It is wet and cold! I can hardly feel my blood moving in my body!"
Terniff jumped as the face of Renwyn suddenly rushed to her. She felt herself becoming wet not just from his soaked body wrapping itself around hers, but also from him carrying her out into the rain. While she had not been able to see him before, now she could also feel him as he again used his voice.
"I LOVE TERNIFF!" He dropped his volume as he said, "I could not previously say your name. It takes a tongue to say your name, Terniff. I could not say 'love' either. Now I can blare both with all being able to understand. You had better like hearing me say your name."
Ah, the changes that come after marriage.
