Alaner signaled a break while almost squealing with pleasure. She thanked me, thanked Althery, then rushed off to wherever she would edit the material. I caught the eyes of a number of those around me with my mother asking the next question.
“What made her so happy?”
“Yes,” I said slightly amazed, “as I only said one thing.”
One of the lions said, “It was obviously what she wanted you to say. We can have her show us the final report later.”
Not just the government can play politics.

Chorith saw me, and galloped over to say, “Those men are good. Whether they have what it takes to kill the pond beast, I cannot say. We of course have to first simply prove that it exists to be killed.”
“Do you think that you could do that?”
“Do what?”
I wrapped an arm around Chorith’s neck to softly inform him, “Mother told me to stay with those men. She said that the Goddess had set me on this mission as well. I could need a mount.”
The lads are not the only ones prepared for what might come.

Father showed no fear of facing the lady, even though she had removed the towels to return to working with her hair, as he said, “Well, Alaner, have you discussed the topic with your tiger father?”
“He says that there is enough humanity in the animals that you still think of yourselves as human.”
Sometimes it takes unusual circumstances to learn things that otherwise would not be taught.

A human male in Alaner’s entourage said, “There was talk of selling a special hunting license, but that was merely to get in more publicity.”
The wolf picked back up, “And that is all that should have happened at the worst.”
Alaner said, “It seems that things did get much worse.”
“Yes, the idiot government expected us to back down – as if we were in the wrong. That was not going to happen.”
The group begins to move toward the pond beast.

Nuchirg in one flowing move released his scabbard to have it drop on the floor. The blade reflected light as he spun it in his hand. He then turned and sent the metal deep into the paneled wall. He drew it out and I saw the dust of the actual granite blocks of the large building. Nuchirg said something that I really did not need Althery to translate.
“Our weapons are not toys. We came to kill your pond beast, and we have the weapons that can do it.”
Alaner whistled, then turned to the camera in the room to say in her usual style, “I believe these men do mean business.”
Alaner begins to grasp that what is happening is not simple entertainment.

I continued to access cameras as I replied. “No. What you are seeing is stupidity. I just played the game. I have just gone through years of learning about my world and the laws. This goes against everything I was taught.”
“Yes, life gets like that at times.”
I spun on Althery to put a finger pointing in his face as I declared, “No, it doesn’t. We have been at peace for over four hundred years. Why do you think that we play the game? Why do you think that people allow themselves to be turned into animals? Our lives do not get like that, and have not gotten like that for centuries.”
Everyone realizes that it is getting time to move on.

“Yes, but they took down the billboard – destroyed it. It is really scary out here. I’m really worried about you Neselle.”
The tone of voice, a little too loud with the words slightly rushed, did not put my mind at ease. “I’m getting worried about you and daddy, and Cousin Deale, and the rest of the herd.”
“Don’t you do that, Neselle. Keep the reading the book. Please, Neselle, promise me that you will keep reading the book.”
Neselle is trying.

“I will walk with you to your room, Lady Neselle. I dropped off some packages for you, and – if you don’t mind – I would like to see you open them.”
I looked at Alaner suspiciously. Her using the title I felt was very improper for her. It really did not sound right when others did, but it was not something that I expected from her mouth. She smiled as if understanding my gaze, but silently strode with me to my room.
After entering my apartment, she closed the door then said, “I am really surprised that they don’t have a camera in here.” She pointed to the packages, then said, “They censored my report.”
Yes, the calm inside the building does not reflect life outside.

He reached out to put a hand around my shoulders, and I put myself close to him as he said, “But you don’t have to do any of that.”
“But I want to. I’m human. That was what my piece of paper said. I’m a human girl – for life. Well, I want to know about being a human girl, and I am realizing that what a human girl used to do was grow up into a human woman. I have the boobs, so I want to learn what else I can.”
The man stuttered, but only held me as he tried to find some words. Nuchirg said something that sounded like a question. Althery replied that he did not know, but wanting to know I asked him what was said.
When people do not know, it is sometimes hard to decide where to go for answers.

Chapter Eighteen: Plans Put on Hold

As I prepared for bed, I looked over my wardrobe wondering how that of a real woman would be different. I could fashion my hair. Nice dresses were in my closet. Bras were with my undergarments in the chest of drawers, as were a packet of cosmetics. I had earrings and even a couple of necklaces for jewelry. As I looked at myself in a mirror and planned my appearance for the next day, I realized that a real woman would be using everything to attract a man.
I sat and cried realizing that I was lost. My home had made me something for another world. My own past prevented me from being a full woman from this other world. I sobbed realizing that I would always be something that others were not.
As in most situations, Neselle is really not given the time to actually become depressed.
