Being Found in Elfland
Chapter Nineteen: Complete
Into the Witch Woods
...
The nod from the knight gave me the impression that it was not a complete truth. While I am certain that elves, and probably fairies, were included in the affirmation, I still felt not to completely trust the response. I thus thought over what little information had been previously provided. Hoping to help my husband, I asked my own question of the knight.
“Titurel, we are going into the Witch Woods. What is meant by witches? Are they nature lovers? Do they dance around naked? Do they use wands and teach their children how to make potions? Do they fly on brooms?”
Again the knight only nodded with his words not really helping. “I have seen all that.”
What is lovely might only be pleasant as long as you simply look.
Being Found in Elfland
Chapter Nineteen: Complete
Into the Witch Woods
Sir Titurel told us not to start a fire that night. Charlie and I both commented that we saw nothing to start a fire with. We could see trees a few miles ahead of us, but none had been seen since leaving Castle Warlock. The knight did not respond to our jibes, but simply told us ladies to eat what we could then go on to bed. As the sky grew dark, we could see lights from a city up in the mountains to the west. Sitting in the darkness, we asked the knight about where we were.
“This is a pagan land, but those in this section of the world are even further from the light of God. They worship all manner of things. While some claim to call to God, they use strange names for him while acting in manner that are not at all Christian.”
Charlie replied, “We are not here on a holy crusade, Titurel. Just give us some basics. Let us start with – are they human?”
The nod from the knight gave me the impression that it was not a complete truth. While I am certain that elves, and probably fairies, were included in the affirmation, I still felt not to completely trust the response. I thus thought over what little information had been previously provided. Hoping to help my husband, I asked my own question of the knight.

Again the knight only nodded with his words not really helping. “I have seen all that.”
Charlie asked, “Is Hogswarts in there?”
I believe that my husband had only seen the movies. I however had read the books along with my girls. I looked around to try and answer Charlie’s question.
“Those were wizards, not witches. I also don’t believe this land has trains.”
Sir Titurel looked at my husband and me strangely as we discussed certain details. I believe that the knight and Michechio clearly understood that we were discussing fantasy, nothing close to even the reality of this world, but some of the facts that we brought up they did consider to have merit. Charlie, of course, focused on the game that was played in the novels and in a couple of movies, using the examples of broom flying and wand usage to consider strategies that we might use in our favor. It took some explaining of special effects along with me reminding Michechio about what I told her of movies, as some of the things discussed had a little more detail than she or Sir Titurel considered a regular story could present.
Really having gained no facts, Charlie and I decided to go ahead and get some rest. I am not going to say that it was good to have her back with me, as I would rather have my husband back as a man. Still, I did tell her that I had missed her the night before, and went to sleep upon hearing her say the same.
We entered the woods close to noon the next day. The canopy was actually desired, as the sun on the parched ground was very unpleasant. Our canteens were far from empty, but I still sought signs of a stream to provide some method of cooling down. It however took some time for our eyes to fully adjust to the near darkness. The trees not only grew close to each other, but a thick growth of vines knitted the canopy together to make travel difficult and prevent almost any light from reaching the ground. We had to look back to check the time of day, because within the forest it only appeared to be night.
There were sounds, but not any of predators. Insects could be heard and seen. We kept looking up due to noises up in the canopy. While the woods appeared threatening, we could not detect any actual danger coming upon us.
We had no idea where to go. There was no way to use the sun for a sense of direction. Charlie mentioned leaving the compass behind, because it did not work in this land. Titurel had been through the forest before, although had admitted that he found things different each time he had passed through. Charlie and I spoke to each other about what we saw, and agreeing with me that a cool stream would be comforting we tried to locate slopes down that might lead to water.
At first what we saw was just some glimmer of color. Now, in a land like this the flash could be from a number of sources. It could be a normal beam of light reflected by a falling leaf or flickering insect. It could also be a fairy darting past. Just as on our world, eyes turn to the bright shimmer of color in order to hopefully determine its source. We could tell something special lied ahead, but we tightened our formation and moved forward cautiously unsure of what we might find.
What came into view was a lovely house that appeared to be made from gems. The roof was made up of slats of obsidian. The chimney appeared of ruby. The windows of sapphire. Chrysoberyl formed the walls with emeralds used for mortar. Onyx framed the windows. A lady used a broom to sweep a path of ivory. I know that I stopped out of disbelief. Whether the others suspected the house itself or trouble to come from nearby it, none of us spoke of denying the beauty of the scene.
Our pause gave the lady a chance to see us. She turned to the house to call out something, and a man came bounding out. Both the lady and the man were human. They were dressed in white blouses overlaid by black. She wore a long skirt while he wore pants with a high front held up by suspenders. She returned to quickly finishing her sweeping while the man came toward us.
“MICHECHIO! Come see, little darling, come see!”
Sir Titurel drew his sword. Charlie and I commanded our mounts to give the knight room while keeping a good view of the scene. Michechio held her position with her face showing confusion, as the man ran to stand before her. The knight did not attack, but I guess that was because the man bowed instead of making a threatening gesture.
“A messenger from Queen Titania came to me bringing a wonderful doll. I was told to make it life-sized from the most mystic wood in this forest. He said that a living puppet sought to become as human, so this creation had to be able to hold her spirit. I have done it, Michechio. Come, see.”
Sir Titurel asked, “And who art thee?”
I expected an evasive answer, as Tough Link wrote that the inhabitants here protected their names. My own experiences supported that. The man however turned as if proud of declaring his identity.
“I am Bedoruchi, the greatest woodworker in this part of our land. Come, see my work.”
The house of gems, the man freely proclaiming his name, and being in the notorious Witch Woods all caused me to feel that something was not right. Sir Titurel however sheathed his sword. I saw my husband study things suspiciously, but she did not speak against the man. Michechio however smiled as Charlie reminded her of words from the ancient fairy queen.
“You were not offered good things, except that you could gain your desire. We thus might as well go look.”
The man said, “Yes, yes, and I have worked to bring to life the most fantastic example of a lady in wood any has ever seen.”
Michechio softly replied, “I want to be a real lady.”
“You don’t want be a puppet lady, Michechio. The body that I made is that of wood, special wood, but most especially it is the body of a woman.”
I dismounted, then walked over to the puppet leading my horse. “Come on, Michechio. This is our mission, so we face the challenges. Let us go look.”
She nodded to me as the man danced back to his house. I helped the puppet down, then led her horse and mine to the knight. I saw my husband dismount and come to join us. I handed the reins to Sir Titurel, then pointed to the house ahead.
“Stay outside, Titurel. I don’t know what we are to see inside the house, but if it is a woman’s body, let us women look.” I saw his eyes travel to my husband, causing me to add, “I don’t like it, but at present Charlie is a woman as well. I also don’t want to make any decisions alone.”
The knight said, “Worry not for me.”
“I won’t, because I don’t believe that you are the one facing danger. However, Titurel, if I am wrong, let me know.”
The knight promised that he would not fight without alerting me, and I assured him that one of us would scream if we encountered trouble. I then moved to my husband, and reminded her that she was fully qualified to scream. She looked to the knight and promised him that he would be warned, although said that it would probably be a shout.
The lady continued to hold her broom as we advanced. She appeared with strawberry-blond hair beneath a white and black bonnet. The smoothness of her face, along with what I could tell of her body, declared that she was not as old as me, and probably was not as old as my husband’s present body. Since this was a woman’s mission, I considered her the real potential threat, although I found myself unable to believe she could present one as I went up to greet her.
The man really did not give the lady a chance to speak more than assure us that the house was clean. I looked to the precious substances that made up the building wondering just how much work it took. I knew that gems could get dirty, but I always thought of them as sparkling. Wondering just how the play of light would be handled inside a house of jewels, I accepted the man’s invitation to enter his home.
The living area itself was beneath the ground. Entering through the door, which was a plate of jade, I saw a spectacle of color as the little illumination outside was enhanced and radiated by all the jewels that made up the walls. On a clear pedestal that I believe was made of diamond was a linen sheet covering what was a female form. The floor was tiled of ivory like the path outside. A stairway down into normal bedrock gave the only rest for the eyes from the brilliance of the room.
The man saw us ladies inside, then moved to the pedestal. He spoke of receiving the doll with the commission to duplicate it on a larger scale. I expected him to ramble on for minutes, but I guess that he trusted in his product to make the sale. After a simple introduction, he pulled on the linen and it slid away to reveal what rested on the pedestal.
It was indeed a life-size duplication of the doll I had seen. While I thought of the wooden lady as being this world’s concept design for Barbie, what I saw on the table was truly a duplication of beauty. The head was less rounded than Michechio’s, although still had a resemblance to her. The blue eyes were large with them almost being considered to be improper. The hair was incredibly of the same reddish-brown as the puppet. I noticed that eyebrows of hair were over the eyes, while Michechio presently only had a line of black paint. The jaw was also hinged, although wider with lips more natural although still having some of the voluptuousness of the puppet. The breasts were large and extremely well shaped. While they did still have a roundness to them, the curve of the wood more simulated the flow of skin. She had wide hips that connected to long smooth legs. While I did not doubt that the wood was painted, especially the colors of the face, no sign of a coating could be made on the highly polished wood surface. Even with the presence of the hinges allowing for the body to move, I felt that those looking at this form would consider it a real lady.
Charlie whispered to me, “No hair between the legs.”
“No, no, no,” Bedoruchi said. “I was told to duplicate the doll given to me. While I was told to make her as a woman,” he spread her legs as he said that, “I was told that the standard of the doll should be followed.”
While Michechio only had smooth wood between her legs, this doll had been given the features of a real woman. The crafting of the vulva was only superficial, although a lot of detail went into the carving of the wood. One could not really move what appeared to be folds of skin or stick a finger into what seemed to be openings. Bedoruchi told us that he had used his own wife as a model, although admitted that she had been required to shave the area for his work. Michechio looked with wonder, although also with a degree of confusion that I believe caused my husband to speak to her.
“If you do get this body, you will need to be much more careful about taking off your clothes.”
I also tried to give some perspective. “Shaving the pubic area is a pain, so you will be glad to have it bare, although you should powder it. Tough Link worked in the sport of football, where ladies ran around in skimpy little outfits. For that matter, what I saw of Alice also had her wearing outfits where she showed off her legs. He thus probably learned to appreciate the look of a bare bottom.”
Charlie tried to give some more information. “My bottom is bare, as, I guess, mermaids don’t have hair down there. Yes, I powder it, but I could move around in a bikini all the time without any problem.”
The puppet looked at us and asked a question on the topic that truly concerned her. “Can I really have this body for my own?”
Bedoruchi ran his hand over the body, even the breasts, as he replied, “Yes. Listen to it, little Michechio. Listen. Can’t you hear? It calls to you.”
She put her ear to the body, then lifted her head as she said, “Yes, I can hear it.”
Strangely, I found that I could as well. It was the voice of a woman, although not of the childish nature of the puppet’s speaking tones. Something in the way the sounds reached my ears bothered me. While definitely feminine, they were deep, droning, and sent shivers down my spine.
Sometimes you just have to let things happen.
