A Dream of Meeting Friends
Story Four: I Will Die for You
Chapter Two

The massive creature composed of the bodies of the small monsters stepped onto the shore without showing any reaction to the number of arrows that came upon it. Sapphire wanted to run and send his hooves into the threat, but seeing the bodies of soldiers easily tossed by a swipe of the great entity caused him to stay in place. Having Cindy near him and not with Therox also helped Sapphire hold his position. Wanting however to show himself as a capable protector of the young lady, he decided to shout some advice to her fiancé.

“THEROX, it is the troll controlling that thing!”

The voice of the elder knight, Merrold, shouted back, “Already working to that end, Sapphire! Therox, hold that line!”

The battle with the trolls does not start well.

Sapphire had to chuckle realizing that the younger knight had the duty of simply suffering the attacks of the monster while the elder knight had his men moving around to safe positions where they could launch attacks at the female troll. The purple horse felt that with the success of ending the curse Therox should have been able to take charge of the strategy and give Merrold the harsher duty. The fact that the younger knight quickly returned to doing the most dangerous task Sapphire considered funny.

He however had to give the young man credit for figuring out a clever strategy on his own. He directed those that saw a great hand come upon them to set their weapons to pierce or scratch. A few men were ordered to move low to the ground to the legs of the great creature and begin to whittle at its support. While the chanting directives of the female troll continued to urge the monster to battle, Sapphire could tell that the conglomerate of beasts that made up the hand hesitated to move down while those of the body began to sway as if becoming unsteady.

An arm wrapped around Sapphire’s neck in what he knew to be a sign of the young lady being happy. The noise from the troll suddenly stopped, then the great monster collapsed into number of small threats. The purple horse saw the little beasts fleeing back to the water as he heard Merrold and his men shout about the troll running away. Sapphire thus found himself smiling and agreeing with the joyful words of the young lady.

Therox however did not have a smile on his face as he approached his fiancé. “Cindy, go pack your stuff. Sapphire, sorry that I am going to put you to work, but I believe that you will agree with me that we need to get you and Sky away.”

“There will always be threats,” the purple horse said in response. “Shoot, Therox, I am sure that even you face danger.”

“As a man, it is our job to secure the land. Still, Sapphire, your duty is to Cindy. Let me deal with this while I remain and take care of the troll.”

“Well, good, as I was worried that you would want to travel with us.”

A confident smile now broke on the face of the young man as he said, “Oh, I will be showing up quickly enough. I am looking forward to escorting Cindy about Hebalsh.” A hand came up to pat Sapphire’s cheek as Therox added, “Take as much time as you want speaking to those lady magic horses.”

As the young man moved back to direct his men, the purple horse felt a variety of emotions. He wanted to again have Cindy to himself, but also wanted to spend time with others of his type. To be honest, he felt that he would be happy speaking with other male magic horses. He had grown up as the only magic horse in the area, so truthfully felt a desire to simply spend time with others of his kind, whether male or female. He however did not want to leave Cindy, especially knowing that she would be with Therox. Confused, Sapphire simply stood still until hearing the sound of soft footsteps weighted by something heavy.

As a saddle was placed on his back, Cindy asked, “Are you wanting to stay, Sapphire?”

“No. I believe that Therox can handle it, but I wish that this problem would keep him busy a long time.”

“Just wait until you find a lady horse.”

The purple horse tried to work through a variety of emotions as he replied, “I don’t think that is going to happen, Cindy. Just like Sky, she will be devoted to her rider. I am devoted to you.”

“I am devoted to you as well, Sapphire, but I also love Therox. Trust me, when you find the right lady, you will be glad to let me spend time with Therox so you will have time with your love.”

“I don’t believe it will be the same.”

“No, Sapphire, it won’t be the same. You are my horse, and I will always be there for you. Therox will become my husband, and I will be there for him as well. You both however represent a different aspect of my life, so I believe that I will easily manage both of you. I don’t want you to be as Gary however. I don’t want you growing up alone and isolated. Yes, Gary was surrounded by a loving family, but there is more to life. I am going to experience it, Sapphire, and I want you to experience it as well. I would die for you, but that is not how I want to live my life. I believe that you would die for me, but that is not how I want you to live your life either.”

The purple horse found himself agreeing with what Cindy said. He still did not feel all of his inner conflicting emotions had been resolved however. To see just how much more wisdom she could provide, he asked a question.

“You are not going to push me and Sky together?”

“I don’t know if she is right for you, Sapphire.”

“She is pretty.”

The young lady laughed, then said, “Well, let us find others to compare her to.”

Sapphire turned seeing the form of Therox approaching. He was softly giving orders to his men as he strode to the young lady. Sapphire did not know what changes had occurred, but waited for the young man to speak.

“Sorry, Sapphire, but I will be with you and Cindy. The problem is Edward’s wagon. I have one as well with my group, but I don’t consider it so important. Edward’s is used in his occupation, so is important to him. Also, Merrold does not consider the trolls to be that much of a threat. He also is the one who had the duty of cleansing this part of the kingdom. I was thus told to assure that the magic horses made it to Hebalsh.”

Cindy’s voice had a tone of suspicion as she asked, “Anything wrong with that, Therox?”

“Not really, but I am concerned about where we should cross. The water does calm down here and in a few other deep places, but the shores are still quite rocky.”

The young lady turned and raised her voice to ask, “Edward, you are from this land. Where are the best places to ford the river?”

The man replied as he finished preparing his stuff to be loaded. “The Saggara River is quite deep near Dehillid, but there are some places where it is easy to enter and exit. I usually have to unload most of the wagon to assure that it will float. Around here, there are a number of places. The water is rough, but if you look there are sections that are not really that deep.”

Therox said, “Well, if you can locate one, we can cross and head on to Hebalsh.”

“Sir, in respect to the magic horses, I would like to travel on up. The land might still be rocky, but even before recent events it was free from the taint of those river creatures.”

“We have some rough going to get above the waterfall, but after that the slope is not so steep. I believe that we can manage.”

Therox motioned to some soldiers, and they took off. Sapphire could only assume that they were going to check on a possible route. Therox kissed Cindy, then walked over to his wagon to check on its progress in being loaded. Sapphire felt what he believed to be the final objects loaded on his body, which was verified by Cindy simply tugging on the packs to assure that all would stay in place. He then felt her simply patting him moving up toward his head, but she stopped and in turning to look at her he saw her motioning to another who was gathering his belongings.

“Ellemon, how are you feeling?”

“Just fine, Lady Cindy, now that you are fine as well. Don’t you go getting cursed again.”

She turned her head to ask, “Therox, are there any more curses between here and Hebalsh?”

“No, Cindy,” the young man replied as he worked with his men. “Hebalsh is the port city for the kingdom of Bechalig. Being a port city, our kingdom considered it important for trade. The king of Bechalig however never agreed with the policies of Nixamata, so did not support the trade in magic horses. In the end most considered him wise in that he got magic horses. Their riders fled to him for safety.”

“You didn’t answer the question, Therox.”

“Oh, well, once Nixamata was killed, King Nichixu was quick to send King Wumash words of gratitude. A number of knights then went to work to remove what curses were active along the routes to Bechalig. They have all been broken.”

Cindy then turned back to the large man to report, “No more curses, Ellemon. We should only face normal hazards.”

The fighter replied, “I know that I can handle those, Lady Cindy. That is what I do for Chordan.”

Sapphire lifted his head along with most others as the sound of distant battle could be heard. Therox called to his sentries, and they reported that they could only make out the faintest of light sources up along the course of the river. The young man then told all to relax, as they would not begin traveling until things settled. A sudden bright light and the sound of screams however caused all to look worried about how the battle was going.

Therox assured that all had finished packing, then he gave the order for all to start moving. Sapphire did not like that the young man would check his directions with Edward, as the elder had really helped little up to now. With Steve being alert, although too weak to be active, Edward’s personality had greatly improved. While Sapphire still felt some concern about the loyalty of the elder, the purple horse had to allow that Edward was the most knowledgeable of the terrain. Therox seeking his advice on how to direct the company could thus be tolerated.

Some of the normal horses reared with a couple of soldiers being thrown as a wall of eerie blue light erupted in front of them before a voice roared, “NO! NO! NO! You not take magic horses. My wife, she hurt bad by other men. I need magic horses to save her.”

Sapphire had to admit that Therox not only maintained control of his mount, but managed to command it to step forward as he said, “If Merrold did not kill your wife, such is his fault. I will however kill you if you do not leave now.”

“NO! I will die to save me wife. I love her. If you want to live, give me your magic horses!”

“MEN! TO ARMS!”

The troll stepped into the wall of flames, and the magical illumination rushed to surround the monster. With his tall green form surrounded by blue energy, he reached out to grab one horse. As the animal was yanked forward, the other hand of the troll shot forth to hurt the soldier riding the animal. The man moved his weapon to meet the great clawed appendage, and while preventing himself from being seriously hurt, the force of the attack still sent him to the ground. As Sapphire saw the horse die from being burnt with magical flame while the hands and teeth of the troll tore into it, he worried about the prospects for his own life.

Yep, trolls that use magic. That is dangerous in any game system.

Well, at least now I can read the comments. I would have been nice if they had ANYTHING to do with the story however (so I guess that it did not matter that I could not have read the comments before Olly did the update). I will however flag this guy to Steve and Olly, as SPAM is unwanted.
