Sapphire and Cindy in -
A Dream of Meeting Friends
Story Two: I Will Pay Any Cost
Chapter Eight

Cindy quickly climbed upon the back of Sapphire as she said, “Trust me. We run forward.”

The purple horse saw the sky become dark with arrows. He heard the rush of troops coming upon them. He did not want to die, but also saw no hope in running away. He thus turned to the mare to have her also accept the words of the young lady.

“If we die, we will die proudly.”

“I will stay with you, Sapphire, as I have found your life better than mine.”

He truthfully felt joy in those words. He thought Sky was lovely. Her story also put her in a situation where he also believed that she would return with him. Sapphire’s one concern about this journey was that he would not find a mare that would be able or willing to live out in the forest. While he could imagine meeting lovelier ladies, he could not imagine meeting someone prettier that was also willing to make her life with his. He thus smiled at Sky even as he told her to stay with him.

Cindy did not have him gallop directly ahead, but it was close enough to a direct path at the enemy that he expected her to have only planned for him to avoid running into Poppa’s wagon.

No sooner did he cover a number of yards than the sky cleared. The sound of surrounding large number of opponents also went away. While he had to keep air flowing in and out of his lungs as he ran, he still felt a need to speak to the one riding him.

“Cindy, the arrows were just an illusion.”

“Not all Sapphire, and there are Nixoops around us. They however don’t really want to hurt you and Sky.”

While he kept his feet moving, he managed to make out the rhythms of other hooves. He looked to the mare and saw her face showing concentration. That caused Sapphire to worry about her. While he had grown up running through the groves around Dachion, he did not know how Sky had been treated or trained. Worrying about her, he spoke to Cindy.

“Do you have a destination in mind?”

“I want to circle around,” the young lady replied. “With a number chasing us, Ellemon and Fimmish should be able to secure their position. Hopefully, when we return, they can direct us to a place of safety.”

Sapphire changed the position of his head to assure that another heard him. “Sky, can you keep running?”

“I don’t want to die.”

It was not the words, but the strength of those words that gave Sapphire hope. He thus set his eyes back to the land ahead of him and chose his path. Cindy would use the reins to guide him when she felt that he did not know the way or would divert the path in a manner he would prefer not to go. He had learned in growing up that if Cindy had a strong grip on the reins when they left for the castle that she would have him detour to pass near the home of Therox. Most of the time her hold on the reins was simply in response to how she was trained, but Sapphire was free to choose his own route once told his destination. While he did not know the land, he had grown up running through trees and had the confidence of recently managing his way among the obstacles of a forest even in complete darkness. His feeling of hope however began to dissolve as he heard the struggling voice of Sky.

“I… have never… run… like this.”

Sapphire felt that Cindy was allowing him to to find his way by asking a question of the mare. “How did Edward usually ride you?”

The words of Sky continued to be broken by large breaths of air as she replied, “He was scared of others seeing me, so never rode me far. Mostly only out to the lake for fishing. On most days I would simply pull a wagon or plow.”

“Plowing is long hard work.”

Sapphire felt that was an odd response for Cindy to make. She had grown up in the very poor section of Dachion, so did not have the space for much of a garden. Her father worked in the castle making buttons. Her mother worked making poultices from ingredients that others brought to her. While Cindy had been taught some things about managing property in her time with the Queen of Mashuv, it still sounded strange for the young lady to choose that subject to speak about.

“Yes,” Sky managed to reply, “those days were so tiring.”

“So, think of this as simply plowing very fast.”

Sapphire felt those words were wonderfully delivered, and the response from Sky gave him hope that she would not falter. “I don’t want to die. I will stay with you.”

While he felt that the mare would continue to run with him, another sound besides her heavy breathing bothered him. He heard the verbal commands for horses to stop their movement. That caused Sapphire to come to a stop as well. He could not help but breathe hard along with Sky as he looked around.

From the forest behind him, he heard the words, “You are surrounded! Give up!”

Sky managed to say, “We have run into a trap.”

“No, we didn’t,” Cindy replied. “They are not talking to us. They saw us rush through the camp, and some are giving chase, but those weren’t able to get on our trail until we got a distance in the woods. They should still be behind us, but a number are riding horses and the sound of their hooves has helped to hide us. The voices we hear are those at the camp, as we were heading in a circle. I want to help Fimmish, Ellemon, or Poppa, but we need to be careful.”

Sapphire had to ask, “So, what do we do?”

“What they do not expect us to do. We hide.”

“You cannot hide us, Cindy. Sky and I do not have brown coats. We are made to be seen.”

The young lady dismounted as she said, “You hid once before, Sapphire.”

He really did not like calling up memories of the year before, but after some thought he managed to recall the event Cindy referred to. “I crawled beneath a thick covering of leaves.”

“We are in a forest, Sapphire. Sounds like a good idea.”

He turned to Sky to say, “Don’t you complain about the bugs. They might be painful, but they won’t kill you.”

She only nodded in return. Sapphire then dropped his stance and walked to where he saw a thick covering beneath an expansive oak around which grew a number of pine trees. The combination of leaves gave a dense irregular pattern to the ground that he felt would not reveal the presence of him or Sky beneath. With her nod to his directions, the two crawled beneath the natural carpet.

Sapphire could tell that Cindy spread some more leaves over the two magic horses. He then heard her move off. He did not know how she expected to hide, but knew that she would watch over them. Sapphire however worried about her, because if she was found and killed, he would die as well.

Again came the distant voice of a Nixoop. “You are surrounded! Give up!”

Sapphire whispered, “Stay quiet.”

A very faint female voice came in return. “I am scared of even breathing.”

The sound of a horse riding up could then be heard. It moved around, and Sapphire felt it coming close to his position. The hooves of the animal then could heard to turn around before its rider made a declaration.

“I cannot see them. Are you certain that we were following them?”

A few more horses rode forward, then a voice exclaimed, “Damn! I knew that we had them. Where did they go?”

Another voice said, “Ah, we don’t make that much money off their coats anyway. Let us just kill the horses the next time that we see them.”

“If you damage any of the internal organs, I will make you pay for the loss.”

Sapphire kept his body completely still, and heard no movement from Sky either. He felt very afraid, and did not doubt that she feared revealing herself as well. The Nixoops however did not move away, but stayed for a time and chatted on what they wanted to do to him and Sky, as well as their plans for Cindy. Those words actually did not bother him, because he had learned about the actions of the Nixoops the year before. He thus managed to keep his body still until the Nixoops finally could be heard moving away.

He and Sky whispered words about wondering if they safe for a time. Sapphire kept telling the mare to wait for Cindy. As he expected, soft movement could be heard coming to their position. She did not start moving the leaves, but only spoke soft words about their situation.

“They have Poppa and Ellemon. I really don’t know what to do.”

Sapphire softly replied, “This is not comfortable, Cindy. Can we safely move away?”

“Yes, but stay low.”

Without much effort, Sapphire felt the leaves fall off his body. He knew from experience that his body resisted being covered by material. While Cindy did wash him regularly, she often commented about spending less time tending to him than she did to herself. There was also the trouble last year in covering his body with oily goop to try and hide his natural purple and red hair color on his ride into the royal city to kill Nixamata. It thus did not surprise Sapphire to see the leaves and detritus that had been upon him quickly drop to the ground as he rose.

As softly as possible, Cindy led him and Sky around the large oak, then away from the Nixoops. Fearing that members of the murderous merchants would be in the area, they would stop behind thick growths of foliage to listen for anyone else following them. Sapphire worried about his metal shod feet being easily identified. He thus put his focus upon where he stepped. Those thoughts also had him feel very self-conscious when Cindy whispered to him that they were being followed.

He softly said in response, “I don’t know if I can move any quieter.”

“It is only one, Sapphire. I don’t know why he hasn’t given an alarm. Maybe he doesn’t really see us. Let us stay still for a time.”

The purple horse really could not hear any definite movement. There were sounds, but nothing that clearly could be made out to be someone walking through the forest. He looked to Sky, but her face simply showed fear. Sapphire found himself wanting to say something to calm her, but feeling scared himself made him believe anything he would say would only sound hollow. He thus simply stayed still and listened for a sound of another coming upon them.

The noise of movement suddenly erupted from a direction that Cindy did not expect. Sapphire lifted and turned his head as the young lady spun. She held out her sword as the form of a young man stopped a number of yards before them. His face showed that he really did not expect to see them, but as the young man’s mouth opened Sapphire knew that his position was about to be announced to rest of the Nixoops.

The forest becomes a rather crowded place.
