Sapphire remembered the event that Cindy referred to, but did not believe that now was the time for her to recount it. Seeing Ellemon move off caused the purple horse to feel that he was left responsible for Sky. As he stepped toward her, he found her moving close to him while meekly asking a question.

“Your rider, she is that Cindy?”

He wanted to add that he was that Sapphire, but showed no reluctance to speak in favor of his rider. “Yes, she is that Cindy. We had a rough journey last year, and were hoping for something more peaceful this year. Still, she has handled some rather dangerous situations.”

“Well, I wished that I had warned her about Poppa and Edward. They can be quite cruel.”


They try to talk things out, but events go from bad to worse.

The voice of Cindy rang out, “I knelt before the dying body of Nixamata as the king himself came toward me with his sword. I cried out, ‘Go now, magic horses, I have saved you!’ I will not have my words made worthless.”

Sapphire remembered the event that she referred to, but did not believe that now was the time for her to recount it. Seeing Ellemon move off caused the purple horse to feel that he was left responsible for Sky. As he stepped toward her, he found her moving close to him while meekly asking a question.

“Your rider, she is that Cindy?”

He wanted to add that he was that Sapphire, but showed no reluctance to speak in favor of his rider. “Yes, she is that Cindy. We had a rough journey last year, and were hoping for something more peaceful this year. Still, she has handled some rather dangerous situations.”

“Well, I wished that I had warned her about Poppa and Edward. They can be quite cruel.”

“You have had Cindy protect you once already. You also know that Fimmish and Ellemon have been holding their own. Just stay here and all should be well.”

Cindy’s distant voice helped reinforce Sapphire’s feeling of confidence as she asked, “You seem to be waiting for others.”

The voice of Poppa returned, “You seem to have others working for you.”

“Those working for me are not agents of death.”

“Darling, you don’t know…” The man’s voice lost strength as it now said, “No, I guess that you do. Your past however is not mine. I ask that you leave here.”

“I will take Sky with me.”

“YOU WILL NOT!

Sapphire wanted to move up to get a view of the setting. He however saw fear on the mare’s face, so felt it best that he stayed with her. Sapphire however also tensed his body in case he might need to rush to Cindy’s aid as she continued to confront Poppa.

“All that you want is the money. I will pay any cost for the mare.”

“Young lady, you cannot understand how much I would desire to simply sell her. The Nixoops however solve another problem that I have besides any financial one.”

Sapphire felt that he heard some tone of concession in the man’s voice, so found it strange that Cindy acted as if the man was still very hostile. “If you want her dead, why don’t you simply kill her?”

“Because the Nixoops will pay for her. No reason not to gain some profit from her death.”

Sapphire had his attention on the distant conversation interrupted by Sky softly saying, “I don’t want to die.”

He replied, “You are not going to die.”

Her eyes lifted to look into his as she said, “I hope that your rider does buy me.”

Sapphire did as well, but then he realized what that would mean. Cindy would then have another magic horse to care for. While up to now he had all of her attention at certain times during the day, he would have to share her even then. That really did not please Sapphire. He did not like sharing her with Therox, and felt that he did not want Cindy caring for another. While the purple horse looked to the light-blue mare with desire, he also found himself not wanting to remove Cindy from her place of importance with him.

He actually felt relief to hear some commotion going on in the direction of the young lady. While he tried to sort out certain feelings, he turned his head so as not to have either female in his view. Hearing the voice of Edward however brought him no relief.

“Poppa, the Nixoops are going to kill us as well.”

The voice of Cindy carried the tones of concern. “Edward, you are hurt.”

The man did not sound as if he spoke to the young lady as he said, “I am glad to still be alive.”

“It is all your fault, young lady!” Poppa shouted. “If you had not arrived, all would have gone well.”

“And Sky would be dead!” Cindy returned.

The voice of Edward said, “And we actually have no proof that Bubba would be all right, Poppa. Everyone told us not to trust the Nixoops.”

Cindy said, “Come with us.”

“GO AWAY!” Poppa shouted. “You don’t know how much trouble you have caused!”

“Killing magic horses has not removed any trouble!”

Fimmish said, “Lady Cindy, come on. We need to go.”

Sapphire heard the lady move toward him. When she finally came through the trees enough to see him, she rushed to hug him. Cindy then gained his reins and those of Sky.

He really wanted the young lady to ride him, but could tell from her actions that she was presently worried about being seen. She kept her body low and led the magic horses through some dense sections of the forest. Sapphire thus accepted that at present she was wiser to walk.

Ellemon and Fimmish moved in spurts from the trunk of one tree to another. Both seemed worried about encountering another massive arrow attack. Not having faced the Nixoops directly, Sapphire could not form an idea about how many of the murderous merchants were in the area. He however did have memories of being chased by them a year ago, and remembered them almost covering the countryside around them. Thus, even though he wished to believe that a majority of those that had worked for the Nixoops had left for other occupations, Sapphire accepted that only a small fraction of the previous number would still represent a sizable force. He thus appreciated Ellemon’s and Fimmish’s caution.

Sapphire saw Cindy turn back from feeling resistance on the reins, then heard Sky ask, “What about Edward?”

The young lady replied, “I don’t know about Edward. It seemed that he and Poppa were rethinking their loyalties, so things could work out. The problem, Sky, is that they are not under a death threat from the Nixoops while you and Sapphire are.”

The purple horse felt a need to say, “I have seen what the Nixoops will do, Sky.”

The words of Cindy brought back some horrible memories, “I had to leave my dearest friend last year because of the Nixoops. They were burning her land. She married the heir to a viscounty in another kingdom, and we had gone to her for information and safety. The Nixoops however marched into her land burning everything along their path. They are not nice people, and will do everything they can to kill you and Sapphire.”

The mare replied, “Well, I am worried about Edward.”

“You probably should be. You should however feel certain that he will not abandon you. I have to believe that there is more to your relationship with him than simply money. Thus, he will come for you. I however want you alive at that time.”

Fimmish came up to say, “Lady Cindy, we need to keep moving.”

“To where? This is not the direction to Hebalsh.”

“No, but I feel safer among the trees and near the hills. The kingdom of which Hebalsh is a part is also in this direction. Hopefully, we can get outside the main force of Nixoops and circle to your destination.”

Sapphire saw Cindy nod, but lifted his head with surprise when she came up to pat him and Sky on the sides of their head as she asked, “Does that sound like a good plan to the both of you?”

He had to reply, “I would like it better if you were riding me.”

“I would rather neither one of us getting caught up in briars as we were fighting the Shibelgo.”

Fimmish said, “Plus, Sapphire, Ellemon and I have left our mounts behind. We don’t need you and Lady Cindy getting away from us.”

Sky said, “Sapphire, I would wish that you would stay with me.”

The purple horse suddenly found himself confused. He liked the words of confidence from the mare, but also felt a strong desire to continue his relationship with Cindy. Sapphire had to think back on his reason for coming on this journey, and found himself thinking that his desire to meet other magic horses was so shallow and selfish. He should have waited until the threats had been reduced. No sooner did that thought cross his mind, than he looked again at Sky and realized that she might be dead now except that he had come. Wondering about the future between him and the young lady, Sapphire tried to make a proper safe statement.

“Cindy, we came to meet friends. If we want to keep meeting them, we need to make the way between us and them safe.”

The young lady smiled upon hearing those words, and the words she said after kissing him caused him to believe that he had indeed chosen the right thing to say. “I don’t want to be secluded either, Sapphire. Come on. We took on the Nixoops before. We can do it again.”

With pride in his voice, he said, “Keep protecting and guiding us, Fimmish.”

The man nodded, then moved back where Ellemon waited. Sapphire moved his head to make his own appraisal of his situation. In doing so, he however found himself trading glances with both of the females. Neither had a completely positive expression. Determined to prove himself in the eyes of both ladies, Sapphire tried to stay alert as he took confident steps.

Movement went well for a time. He found himself again wondering exactly how many Nixoops were in the area. Just as he began feeling that they had indeed gone beyond the awareness of the merchants that would seek his death, Ellemon made a strange sound then sent his sword through the tree he ran to for cover.

“Look out, Dearie! I believe that we entered a trap.”

Sapphire felt scared as the trees around him began to disappear. He heard the women yell in fear, although the sounds of the men did not sound hopeful. As the large plants faded from existence, a circle of stone was revealed. The purple horse became anxious with worry as he heard a distant voice speak about the seriousness of the situation.

“We have you now, killers! Expect to face justice!”


Well, I guess we will learn if they can really handle the Nixoops.
