Sapphire and Cindy in -
A Dream of Meeting Friends
Story One: In Darkness I Will be There
Chapter Six
...
Sapphire forced his head around to look at the saddle. He wanted to see if Cindy’s sword was still in its scabbard. He felt foolish realizing that he could see nothing in the dark. He thought of going back out of the darkness, but realized that most of the light had gone throughout the land as the day ended.
Understanding that if Cindy did not have the sword that had been given to her that she would need it, Sapphire again moved through the darkness. He gave his lady credit for being able to seek a weapon, but the threats that had come upon them could not be hurt in the usual manner. He remembered the risks that had been required to end the other threats to their lives. If she for some reason had managed to take the sword with her, Sapphire still felt that he needed to be there. He knew that he had been able to hurt some things that those with special weapons could not.
The question comes, 'If you cannot see it, can it really be hurt?'

A Dream of Meeting Friends
Story One: In Darkness I Will be There
Chapter Six
Sapphire felt that he had no choice but to run back. While he felt winded, he reminded himself of previous days that he had been forced to run for extended periods. He still heard people speak of his long run with Cindy from open country through the fields surrounding the royal castle all the way into the main edifice where the king sat in state under the watchful eye of the evil Nixamata. Sapphire knew of many days when he continued to play with Cindy and Alledia until all were quite tired. Those memories inspired him to again rush through the dark forest.
He did not yell for Cindy. Horses did not speak, and he remembered many that reacted with great surprise when he did. Horses also did not have purple coats with red hair. He had seen the coats of many other magic horses like himself, except they were dead, and they all had coats of very bright colors. The only living magic horse he had ever met, besides one that spoke to him in her dying moments, was a colt too young to yet speak and another male magic horse named Gary. Sapphire liked talking, especially to Cindy. He however could not speak without stopping. He needed to pump air in and out to power his body, and he would not pause in covering the distance.
Only when he again found himself unable to see anything around him did he stop. Sapphire still did not yell. While horses were not supposed to speak, girls were. Cindy would chatter, speak wonderful advice, or simply scream. Over the sounds of his own lungs working to restore some inner calm to his body, he hoped Cindy would scream. He did not think that he would locate her otherwise.
A sense of panic filled the purple horse understanding that his lady would not be yelling for him. If she did raise her voice, it would be for him to run away. He had done that unknowingly, and while she was probably glad that he was safe, Sapphire was not happy at all that Cindy was not.
He had grown up thinking that he and his lady were the same age. As his body grew and matured, so did she. It took him understanding some facts about people and horses for him to realize that Cindy had over a decade of years more than he. She and Alledia had many years of being friends before he came into Cindy’s life. She had thus knowledge of why he had been born, watching him being born, and being there to care and nurture him as he grew. Sapphire was not her companion, but her baby, her pet, and probably other things as he became a part of her life. Cindy had raised him. While his life was tied to hers, she had a deep connection to him as well from being there for him when he was too young to be there for her.
His ears picked up hearing a scream. He felt joy not hearing Cindy. What he instead heard was a strange extended yelp. He still felt that the low tones were artificial, although no break occurred revealing the true voice.
He cautiously trotted forward. He did not worry about trees, because he did not run. The purple horse did not try to sneak up. He could not remove his metal shoes, so understood that he would make some noise. All he could do was hope that his four legs would be assumed to be that of another animal native to the forest. Even if he was noticed, he would not complain should his presence cause the entity to take its focus off of Cindy. Sapphire thus took each step hoping that his lady would hold her own until he could reach her.
He stopped upon hearing the sound of something tearing through some underbrush, then the deep rough voice say, “You are a foolish girl. You might have a weapon that can hurt me, but you cannot see me. I however can see you.â€
“You come near me again, and I will hurt you again.â€
Sapphire had to hold back any reaction of joy to hearing the voice of Cindy. He also had to prevent himself from rushing to her. In the darkness he had no way of knowing what was between he and her. He closed his eyes to prevent himself from thinking he could see, then calmly continued to advance towards those speaking.
Some more movement could be heard, then Cindy exclaimed, “You won’t kill me.â€
“Kill you? Darling, I don’t want you dead. I want you worshipping me. Kneel. State your devotion to me.â€
Those were strange words to Sapphire. Every other threat had sought his death along with Cindy’s. He thus did not believe the voice, and understood by the response of his lady that she did not either.
"I will not let you come close to me.â€
“You cannot prevent my presence. You might be able to harm me, but you cannot kill me. Yistalix could not kill me, and I watched as she kept the local people scared of her. She is gone, so again I have come out of hiding.â€
Sapphire heard some movement that he believed to be Cindy swinging her sword. She had practiced with it, but only enough to enable her to hold it properly and swing it without hurting herself. While her fiancé and future father-in-law did work with the lady on properly using the weapon, she considered the time to be visiting with the men and not perfecting a skill that she might need to use to save her life. The purple horse recognized the light feet as they tried to move thought leaf covered ground, and he felt certain it was her blade that disturbed the foliage. The sound of her voice however confirmed his belief.
“I was one of those that killed Yistalix! I am not scared of you!â€
“You should be, because you cannot see me.â€
Sapphire could not see, but focused upon the voices. He easily determined that Cindy was not close to the other speaker. While he could not be certain of the distance or exact position, Sapphire felt a need to take action. Trusting that clearly hearing the strange speaker meant that no solid barrier existed between them, the purple horse galloped forward.
Remembering the earlier brush of what he thought was the creature, he did not stop upon feeling himself amidst a thick growth of some plant with large leaves. Sapphire kept his feet moving determined to strike hard something. He did indeed recognize the possibility of ramming a tree, but he thought to make a strong act of overcoming the threat.
He came to a stop extremely amazed to feel something substantial contact him, then move away. While he was hopeful that he had struck the creature, Sapphire still felt a need to verify things. He also wanted to hear Cindy to assure that she was safe. The words that he heard gave substance to the former.
“What are you doing, horse?â€
“Letting you know that we can hurt you.â€
“I’m not hurt.â€
Sapphire heard movement, so spoke with confidence. “I am not hurt either. If I were you, I would leave now.†He then moved in what he thought was the right direction to go to Cindy, but spoke to have her speak. “Cindy, are you all right?â€
“I’m fine, Sapphire.†The lady could be heard taking cautious steps in his direction as she said, “I was so worried about you.â€
“Come on, let’s go.â€
“No. I am going to kill this thing now.â€
The low rough voice of the entity said, “You cannot hurt me.â€
Sapphire however could hear determination in the manner Cindy took her steps and whispered his name. She was not calling to him with any expectation of obedience. She only wanted to know his location and that he was safe. As he stepped up near her, she moved her hands over him until reaching his neck. Cindy then hugged him before issuing a simple command.
“Stay here, Sapphire.â€
He knew that voice of Cindy, and did not challenge it. The purple horse had always known her to have an inner strength. As his mind developed, he came to recognize Cindy as being the one who cared for him. When he gained the strength to carry her on his back, she never spoke to deny him any challenge that his young mind could conceive as a test for his developing power. Sapphire had heard the story that all said set the situation of his birth. Cindy had gone to the aid of Princess Alledia who had fallen from her horse and broken a leg. Somehow Cindy had managed to bring her home. While the purple horse knew that ladies were supposed to be the weaker sex, he had seen his mistress do things that would have caused many men to collapse under the stress. He thus did not consider her words as being those of a silly girl, but as those of someone who could get a job done.
“If I could see,†Sapphire whispered in response, “I would go with you.â€
“Yes. I might not have the best form when striking with my sword, but I believe even Sir Hivarn would make wide swings in this situation.â€
Cindy made a few steps away from Sapphire, then he heard a sound that he easily recognized as her making a swing with her blade. He actually took steps wanting to seek the comfort of a tree. He figured that the solid trunk would give him some protection from any attack should the conflict move in his direction. Also, the knowledge of the location of one wooden shaft would hopefully reduce his chance of encountering another should he feel a need to rush to Cindy.
The grumble of their opponent replied, “You were trying to do this earlier, and you accomplished nothing.â€
No statement came in response. Sapphire however heard a rush of movement along with sounds of leaves and branches being disturbed. All then went quiet until the deep voice spoke.
“You cannot hurt me.â€
Again a rush of movement could be heard. The noise of the blade moving however did not sound as it did previously. Sapphire felt his body go cold as he heard Cindy scream while the low voice of their antagonist laughed.
The struggle is brought to those who deserve it.
