History of Mardon Castle
Chapter Sixteen
Part 2
...
Tasbirn stood ready to do something to keep the positive energy flowing. “What did Kaervel request? More soldiers?â€
Nalisha stayed seated as she replied, “He said in a couple of months, when the cycle would repeat.â€
“I will lead that company myself. I want to be there when the curse is removed.â€
“Of course, my lord. I would like to join you, but I feel that I will need to stay with our child by then.â€
“By spring the baby should be strong enough for travel. I will walk through those flowers with you and our child.â€
The future is discussed, which is slightly entertaining -- but, oh, you don't know, do you?
History of Mardon Castle
Chapter Sixteen
Part 2
Tasbirn had not bothered to rise from his chair. While he actually felt useless, he could think of nothing to do. A soldier did look into the room, then pulled back as the pregnant body of the viscountess stepped through the door. She locking the door behind her did not trouble him. He thought it was good that he could depend upon another to handle some of daily problems. He only smiled as his wife moved to sit nearby.
“My lord, you know that Kaervel sends his reports to me. I believe that you really should read it however.â€
Tasbirn closed his eyes as he calmly replied, “Have you read it?â€
“It is rather lengthy, but it does seem positive in tone.â€
“Then read it aloud.â€
He had to sit up as Nalisha read the report. While Tasbirn saw the smile on his wife’s face, he felt certain that she knew his pleasant expression was due to the words from Kaervel. The entire letter was a glowing report of the success of the mage’s plans. Tasbirn felt proud of what he had done to support Kaervel, and listened with a belief to keep supporting the man. The final words from Kaervel almost made Tasbirn want to stand up and cheer.
“My dear Nalisha,†the lady smiled at her husband before continuing, “I promised you that you would walk upon dry ground through a field of flowers. We are now standing upon the firm foundation of the original castle. Right now very little sun gets down there, and I have to keep a fire going to warm the blood of the kevalla. As more area gets uncovered, more light reaches the bottom. By this spring there will be sections that get the full light of sun. I will plant that ground with flower seeds, and you will see my promise fulfilled. That will occur soon, but with the land restored it will happen again and again. Your children and mine will think of fields of flowers as being as natural to Mardon as they are in other lands. Ever your servant, Kaervel.â€
Nalisha continued to stay seated as she asked, “Will you now go back out with your net?†He turned confused by the question, and he saw his wife notice his expression before explaining. “The only regret Kaervel stated was in not getting useful information about what was needed to be done. Telelum needs to tell us more.â€
Considering that one of those under him was having success, he felt that others should be able to have success as well. “Telelum really didn’t respond to me, but to Terniff. Where is she?â€
“If what Kaervel says is true, you should be getting a positive report from her soon. Kaervel sends his by magic, but Terniff has to send a messenger. I would say that you should get a report tomorrow. I however believe that she will be taking her husband to Sekurd.â€
“That should have her intersect Telelum’s route. Maybe he will speak to her again.†He did not see a change of expression on his wife’s face, so sought a more reasonable reply. “Okay, maybe I could take a patrol out along the usual route and see if the ghost will speak to me.â€
“When will the snows come?â€
He moved to sit again next to his wife as he answered, “Not until Hakkayer. Chaucet gets the snow first as it sits in the southern mountains. Those same mountains however protect us from the worse of the cold weather. What we mostly get are the frigid breezes from the ocean, which do not bring snow as much as mush. You think that travel is bad now, in the next few weeks it will get really unpleasant.â€
“I guess that it is a good time to be with child, but I will think of you, my lord.â€
He reached to hold his wife’s hand as he said, “By the gods, Nalisha, we will have our time together. I have told you about this land in winter, and it isn’t pleasant. The swamp does not freeze. The rotting vegetation keeps a warmth to the ground, so even if you get a crust of ice and snow your feet will often break through to sink into the still wet mud beneath.â€
“I survived the war with you. You should not doubt that I could not handle the problems of this land. I will make it my home, and the home for my children.â€
“Nalisha, I don’t want you being like Terniff. I married a very lovely flower, as I want that for my home. There are flowers in this land, but not like those I saw elsewhere. I went on numerous expeditions with my father up into the mountains, and saw the flowers that grow there. I then went on one diplomatic mission with Inelgo, and saw the flowers growing in lands beyond Mardon. I saw children playing among those flowers. Our children cannot play among the flowers here, because they grow out in the water, up in trees, or on thorny vines. I found myself wanting my children to be able to play among flowers.†Tasbirn hand moved to touch his wife’s face as he said, “I wanted to play among flowers, so I married you.â€
He face did not show any pleasure in the analogy. “I am only one, my lord.â€
“You are the one that I chose.â€
A smile now did come to Nalisha’s face, but it quickly disappeared as she spoke on a more practical topic. “I believe that it is getting time for the evening meal. I need to go change into an appropriate garment.â€
Wondering about what the lady was thinking, Tasbirn asked, “Do you think that the curse will be removed?â€
“Yes, my lord. I have seen what you and those under you are capable of doing. I have also seen the price you are willing to pay for victory. Kaervel is such a nice, nice man, but he gets so committed to a project that he is willing to sacrifice anything for success. I thus am worried about the toll this victory will demand.â€
Tasbirn felt that those words were not proper, and spoke his reason for believing so. “That lady was a traitor.â€
“He only needed to kill the crow. She could have simply been contained. After the victory, I don’t believe she would have ever had a reason to deny him.â€
“Kaervel would not have thought about her the same way.â€
“Yes, that is true, but I still don’t believe he grieves for killing the crow. He might pine for the love he lost, but if he had not killed her he would not be now feeling the weight of his actions.â€
Tasbirn looked over his own attire and decided that he also needed to change, so sought to end the conversation. “I told him to go into the castle after our final victory and take a girl, but he wouldn’t.â€
“No. By then he had agreed with you to return flowers to Mardon. While you were bringing a flower home with you, he made the decision to pick one that already grew here.â€
Tasbirn moved to kiss his wife before escorting her to her room as he said, “Do you believe that he will choose someone like Terniff?â€
“Is that who you would have me choose for him?†He saw his wife look into his eyes before adding, “Kaervel said that he is not going to choose. He said that he will accept whichever flower comes to him. I thus believe that he will gain a strong woman, like Terniff. I don’t know if that is really what he desires however. The one that he chose was not like her.â€
“She was not like you.â€
“No, but I believe that I can find one like her. I will need to move about the land, something that my present condition does not allow me to do. I almost asked Terniff to help me, but I didn’t, as I don’t believe she could help.â€
Tasbirn could not help but smile as he said, “No, I don’t believe she could help. Hopefully, nothing will happen too quickly. We can plan a number of balls and celebrations later in the year. You can thus have a chance to meet the available ladies.â€
“Oh, those will be wonderful times to have certain ladies meet Kaervel, but I hope to have a better idea about the prospects by that time. There are other plans at work, my lord.†Nalisha smiled at her husband as she said, “I like being in a position of power. I find myself informed of a number of things. While nothing is certain, I believe that I will have help in a number of areas very soon.â€
Tasbirn stopped as he attempted to resolve what his wife had said. He looked to his wife’s face, and saw her looking to him. Finally concluding that he would simply have to ask, she somehow understood the movement of his face and simply spoke.
“I know that you do not like surprises, my lord. I will thus tell you that this letter from Kaervel was not the only one to arrive today. I received one from my mother.â€
The words surprised Tasbirn, but he really did not find the news disturbing. “Is she coming?â€
“Yes, but, my lord, just like Kaervel’s, it came by magic.â€
Now he was disturbed. “What? I thought every mage in your land had been killed. The bad ones killed the good ones, and we killed the bad ones.â€
“This letter did not come from my home kingdom, my lord. It came from the kingdom of which Brigallick is a part.â€
“Renwyn’s home.â€
Nalisha indicated for him to begin moving towards her chambers before saying, “Now, my lord, nothing definite was stated. You thus cannot blame me for withholding information. I however know my mother. I also know of a letter that Renwyn sent to his parents. I thus have my suspicion that we will soon have visitors.â€
“My castle is always a gracious host to visitors.â€
“So I have heard, my lord. I will however be watching to assure that your words ring true.â€
Tasbirn bent over to kiss his wife before saying, “So, I believe that we both have things to be doing. I hope that your plans go as well as mine seem to be going.â€
“Thank you, my lord. Whatever our results, I am glad to have you as my husband.â€
“And I can think of no better flower to have as a wife. I will be waiting for you in the main dining hall.â€
Closing the door behind him, Tasbirn considered that his life was complete. He however thought of the recent information and what plans he needed to be doing. No longer feeling useless, he started moving to assure that his new plans would commence.
Back to Kaervel and Axiste as the work moves towards the castle.
