Bards, Tails & Poetic License Chapter Three

Truthfully, Jackal considered the situation to be similar to one he was in earlier. He was with Rain at the time, but the odds were still two against a company of men. The opponents at that time were armored as were those presently surrounding them. This situation was actually better, because at that time he and his companion were scantily attired and polymorphed into ladies. Of course, those previous soldiers were mesmerized by a Lamia and not exactly working at full mental capacity, but Jackal still eyed the present opponents feeling that he could evade them.

Yep, back from my vacation. Have plenty of ideas to keep the story continuing.

Chapter Three

Truthfully, Jackal considered the situation to be similar to one he was in earlier. He was with Rain at the time, but the odds were still two against a company of men. The opponents at that time were armored as were those presently surrounding them. This situation was actually better, because at that time he and his companion were scantily attired and polymorphed into ladies. Of course, those previous soldiers were mesmerized by a Lamia and not exactly working at full mental capacity, but Jackal still eyed the present opponents feeling that he could evade them.

Watussin had traveled enough with Jackal to expect an action from him. She hoped that he did not consider himself able to fight all the men, but would instead merely attempt to flee into the mist. If the soldiers truly thought the fog cloud to be a phenomena from a local lake, the men might not be concerned with where they entered the mist and lose themselves due to falling. The elf lady considered that most would simply follow whatever path she took, so would present a continuing problem. The female fighter looked to her armor, but felt confident that her lithe elven form was not encumbering her mount as much as that of the armored human men around her.

Rain was glad that Fenshallit had obeyed his command to simply climb into the bed of the wagon and hold on. She was actually a wonderful lady to talk with, and did have a personality that was able to stand untarnished next to her husband, but the white haired lady really had no experience at living life outside of patrolled chambers. The elf cleric saw the company of men circling his wife and Jackal, and knew that Fenshallit would not respond to the men in the manner that the situation demanded.

Watussin smiled as she realized her husband was not slowing the wagon. As much as Rain might privately complain about the behavior of his friend, the elf cleric understood that Jackal had often been right. Rain had thus learned to allow other options into his lifestyle than what normal procedures dictated. The only problem with his actions was that he could not know the location of the road into the rift. The violet haired elf lady kicked her horse to start the animal moving towards the proper path into the mist.

Jackal was actually relieved to see his elf friends initiating action. The problem however was that there were too many opponents. Feeling certain that a certain mage was in peril, if not already dead, Jackal set himself upon acting.

Watussin heard the commands for her to stop moving. She knew that some missiles were pointed at her, but was trusting in her armor to ward off most of the serious pain. The elf lady had to turn as the cries from the soldiers changed in pitch. Jackal was sitting behind the major on his horse. The violet haired fighter wished that she had seen that feat managed, although knew that it probably happened too quickly for any real appreciation to have come upon the witnesses. The military officer was certainly surprised by the event and was looking around attempting to assess his situation. Jackal seemed amazed that his stunt had worked, although yelled to his companion in order to keep things moving.

"Go after, Dethii! If I don't follow, you can ransom me from my dungeon cell later."

The elf lady did not argue with the man. She yelled to her husband to follow the wagon ruts, then started her horse moving down into the mist. The initial movements of the mount were done quickly, although Watussin did not force the animal to keep rushing its steps once surrounded by the vapor. Neither were able to see. The armored elf dismounted and felt for the wall of the rift with one hand while testing the ground with her feet.

Rain was glad that the soldiers were interested in their leader. He still feared directly challenging the trained fighters, so turned the horses to circle the troops. It helped that some of the soldiers carried lights, because Fenshallit had set their lantern down in order for her to keep herself secured in the bed of the wagon. The glow from the opponents allowed the elf cleric to discern the trail of previous vehicles. Feeling confident that where the ruts led was also the place that his wife descended into the mist, Rain had his horses advance into the cloud.

Orders for the animals to keep running were not issued as the mist blocked all light sources. To be honest, there was a very meager glow in the mist from the lit lantern, but it was not usable radiation. Rain called out for his wife, and felt relief when she answered. Learning that she was walking her animal, the elf cleric called to Fenshallit for her to hold the reins as he found his way to the heads of his steeds. The white haired lady however voiced her concern for her husband.

"Don't you worry about Jackal," Rain replied, "if he does not follow then he is correct about being brought before the local monarch. This is supposed to be a viscounty, but we might be only in a barony of that realm. Anyway, we should be able to find him unharmed."

The human lady was not comforted by those words. "My husband is not one to allow himself to be left out of an adventure."

The voice of the elf lady sounded from a distance, "Don't worry about Jackal. Those soldiers were only trying to stop us. They really did not act to kill. Unless your husband does something stupid and completely suicidal, he should be all right."

Jackal was desperately attempting to prevent himself from being a target. The major was not exactly being cooperative, but was already bleeding at the neck from moving when he should not have. The edge of the dagger was not put at his throat in order to bring death, but neither was it moved back when the officer tested the sharpness of the metal. Jackal yelled at the soldiers the difficulty of his position, and that any quick action he was forced to enact could well end the life of their leader. The soldiers took the threat seriously, although still worked at maneuvering to better their position even as the bard sought to move the animal beneath him.

The major attempted to make life hard on his opponent by loudly stating, "Men, don't let him take me near the mist!"

Jackal growled in return, "How are they going to stop me without harming you?"

The officer attempted to sound confident as he returned, "The road is over there."

"It is only a few feet down to a lake, remember?"

Jackal had not yelled his words, but neither had he whispered them. Some of the soldiers nearby thus heard what he said. The major definitely heard what he said. They all started acting rather strangely in that their body language did not match their expressions. Having the officer directly before him, the muscular bard could tell that the calm expression on the major's face did not match the stressed muscles on the rest of his body. The military personnel gave directions to each other that did not state a concern for their leader being brought near the edge of the mist, but they attempted to move their horses to cut off any access to the layer of cloud.

The soldiers were preventing Jackal from coming close to the road down into the rift. In fact, to manage getting close to the mist the man in studded leather had to maneuver the horse that he and the major were on further and further away from the only known safe passage down. Truthfully, Jackal did not desire to suffer a long fall, but he certainly did not have pleasant memories of being captured and thrown into a dungeon. To be honest, scrapes, bruises, and even broken bones were preferred over what had been done to him the last time he was incarcerated.

Heads turned to the baying of wolves. Jackal grew concerned at the sound, because he worried about his friends. He really was not worried about himself. The soldiers were a problem, but only because he was hoping for a workable solution. He would rush into the mist and suffer the fall if the situation here did not improve. A sense of duty along with a fear of imprisonment kept him from considering the option of allowing himself to be subdued by the soldiers.

Watussin heard the distant call of the wolves, and relayed the information to her husband. He had also heard the animals, but took the information calmly before telling Fenshallit to unroll a blanket from the back of the wagon. The human lady thought the command odd, but listened to Rain mention the narrow path they were presently upon. He stated that the wolves surely could not see any better in the dark than they were managing, so might follow the barrier of cloth as just a turn in the rock wall of the rift and run off the edge. Fenshallit liked the plan, so moved in the wagon to locate the proper item.

The soldiers were in a quandary about what to do. They wanted to resolve the situation with their leader, but understood the threat that the wolves could present. The military men could fight from horseback, but understood that the animals would not attack them but their mounts. The horses did have some barding to protect them in most encounters, but the wolves could easily attack low where the hardened leather was not present. There were thus comments from some soldiers about whether or not to dismount.

The wolves seemed to be directed towards the road into the rift, but seeing the military caused them to stop. The soldiers called to their leader with slight tones of desperation. Jackal knew from direct experience that the animals could put up a good fight, but it was their quick and direct actions that had given them the advantage earlier. The human bard felt certain that the trained personnel around him could overcome the canines.

"Release you hold on me," the major growled, "because I have the medallion that will cause the wolves to ignore us."

"I have friends down that path. I would rather the wolves stay."

Those words really did not affect the mood of the officer. "My men would rather not fight the wolves. They belong to Lord Yestinin, and we give him allegiance."

"If he is the one that lives below the mist, I would rather the wolves no longer be available."

The major started to squirm in the saddle. Jackal felt secure in his position, but the man sitting before him started putting more force behind his movements. Up to now the officer had been trusting in his men to achieve his release, but he now recognized a need to take matters in his own hands. Jackal had a solid seat upon the back of the horse, and the military leader was hampered in his movements due to the pieces of metal covering his skin.

Jackal realized that the major was considering his situation as being desperate as the man put all his weight into removing the threat sitting with him on the horse. The bard was not going to allow himself to be displaced so easily, but clung to the officer. The military leader showed no concern for himself as he performed a maneuver that sent himself from the mount. Jackal kept his grip on the major determined that he would have company to share the misery of the fall.

The hands of the bard released the officer as he realized that they were not going to quickly meet the ground. Jackal did not believe that he had moved so close to the wall of the rift, but could only assume that the struggle on the back of the mount had caused the horse to step closer to the edge of the mist. The bard grabbed at dirt and grass, but the flora was already stressed from a daily struggle against the forces of erosion and the weight of the man was too much for their roots to maintain their integrity.

Thoughts of the major had fled from the mind of the bard, but such returned when he felt a grip on the seat of his pants and a voice declare, "Oh, no, you are not going to climb out. You are going to find out just how far it is to the bottom."

Well, things continue to look desperate for our group.
