Feast at Serpic-Moreal
Epilogue

Hoduyyal stood outside his shop smoking his pipe and looking at the nearby dragon. He agreed that the bright yellow scales demanded a special alloy of metal with a set of designs to properly enhance the look of the creature. It took time to consider exactly how to act, as each dragon had its own physique and manners that affected how it appeared. He thus looked at the creature and studied the land, the trees, and the sky to determine the right coverings to create.

The pipe plopped to the ground as the jaw of Hoduyyal dropped open. A hand had been helping to support the basket of the device, but it simply froze in place and did not react to the falling of the smoking item. While working with dragons continually presented Hoduyyal with odd situations, he could still be surprised.

The one that owned the yellow dragon reacted as his beast tried to break its bonds. It was the actions of the man that caused Hoduyyal to realize that he should move as well. There were not that many places for a dragon as large as the one approaching to land.

Hoduyyal had studied dragons and their lore, so had a name for the great silver creature that settled into a space on the dunes on the ocean side of a lake near his home. He looked to the animal not expecting to see a rider. There had been occasions in the past when a dragon had sought him personally for some protection for their form. A creature as grand as Benurthed surely needed no armor, but it was imaginable that something for vanity would be desired.

As expected, no one was upon the back of the great dragon. Hoduyyal however realized as she landed that there were objects in her hand. As the grand creature felt secure on the ground, she moved to lightly set down what she had been holding. Hoduyyal ran forward when he recognized an armored form.

The dwarf man and human lady cried as they buried themselves into each other's form. They cared not for the others around them, but openly displayed their joy at being reunited. They finally parted with Hoduyyal seeing humans and dwarves around him. All were strangers except the lady and three human men. Hoduyyal fixed his gaze on one of those men, but he mumbled something before moving off.

"Ninette, I expect you to bring Scorplin to the house."

The lady ignored her father as she rose to assure the identification of two others. "Hoduyyal, you should remember Kerda and Betesht."

"Certainly, Ninette, but where is Aviarne?"

"He did not survive, Hoduyyal. Bestesht can tell you the story if you want to hear it."

"At another time, Ninette. To come back from Serpic-Moreal having only lost one companion is a wonderful accomplishment. I had heard rumors to the contrary."

"Oh, Hoduyyal, I ran. I was so scared, and I ran. I would not be here, and I would not have succeeded except that I somehow met some wonderful people. Hoduyyal, this is Scorplin."

The armor smith noticed how the lady moved close and put her arms around the man. He had a full beard, and that the dwarf considered a good sign. He had an ease about him in holding the lady, but held himself in a manner that still radiated confidence. Hoduyyal made it a point to come to know this man even as he listened to the lady introduce the dwarves with her.

"Alchort, Turlell, and Morten are three of the five dwarves that hired Scorplin for a mission to claim Serpic-Moreal. The real leader was Borshik, but he is having to stay in the fortress to assure that its restoration goes properly. There is another dwarf, named Edgeron, and he stayed to prepare a place for his family."

Hoduyyal wanted to properly greet the dwarves, so whispered to the lady, "*Ninette, beer.*" Watching her kiss Scorplin before rushing off definitely marked the man as someone that needed to be treated properly. "What brings the pleasure of your company?"

Betesht replied, "Excuse us, Lord Hoduyyal, but Kerda and I are going home. Our families are certainly worried about us. We know that you want to hear our story, but we will allow these men to presently take up your time."

"Well, did you find the chalice?"

"Aviarne and I did not find it, but these gentlemen here did. Turlell fought and gained it from the one that had it. I was promised the use of the chalice should I desire, but with the loss of Aviarne I presently feel more sorrow at what might be offered than joy. I might return to Serpic-Moreal one day, but right now I am going home."

"I wish both of you the best. Please return and tell me your stories. Ninette is the daughter that I never had, but both of you young men also shared time with me. I feel that both of you are a part of my family."

Cordial statements past between the two and those who Hoduyyal only knew by name. He waited for a more personal greeting. The human seemed to want to make such a statement, but looked to one of the dwarves to speak first.

"I am Alchort. I was the second-in-command to challenge Serpic-Moreal, and now am the prime advisor beneath Lord Borshik."

"Lord Borshik?"

"Well, we really are uncertain of the politics. Taking the title of baron seemed too undignified, but claiming the title of king might stir up conflicts. Borshik is going to see how he is treated before deciding on his actual rank."

"So, there was wisdom and not simply arrogance that won Serpic-Moreal."

"We are hoping that our story is told in such a manner. We do not claim to be the most ideal members of our race, but we gained our victory with our own skills. Turlell and Morten have their qualities that brought about our victories. Morten was the one that made us aware of the available talents of Scorplin, and he supplied what talents we lacked."

Hoduyyal felt that he finally had the opportunity to speak to the human. "Scorplin, I noticed that Ninette seemed to like you."

"It is Lord Scorplin. I am from Phomorsh with these gentlemen, but have my own holding outside a barony. Or did, until an earthquake destroyed it and my family. Ninette seems to believe that she would be happy restoring my life. I have told her that she would have to wait out a period of mourning, but she is determined to mark the year as preparation."

"She returned wearing my armor."

"That was a wonderful gift that you made for her. More than that, you gave her fantastic guidance. Ninette brought not only joy to our company, but proved herself to be a profitable member of our group. Though she griped and complained about her father, she constantly bragged of her association with you and how much she treasured your affect on her life."

"I believe that you already heard that I consider her the daughter that I never had. Speaking of the lady, she should have steins filled. Come, all of you, into my home."

A great feminine voice said, "That is my cue to leave. It seems, Scorplin, that when you return that there will be even more to speak about."

The human replied, "If not for Ninette, I might have chanced taking up the offer, Bernuthed. I will always consider you the mother-in-law that I never had. Yes, I will come and speak to you again of family."

All watched as the great dragon rushed to the ocean in order to catch the incoming breeze to help her lift her form into the sky. Once her feet were above the land, the expansive wings went to work and propelled the great beast over the waves. As the dragon became a speck in the sky, the men faced each other to return to the conversation, which Hoduyyal did by making a comment.

"Mother-in-law that you never had?"

"You work with dragons, Lord Hoduyyal. Surely you understand that they have personal problems as well."

Hoduyyal had Ninette keep the steins filled as he listened to the story of the defeat of Serpic-Moreal. It was a fantastic tale with each person in the narrative being important to the drama as a whole. Hoduyyal found himself wishing that Borshik and Edgeron came as well. He however declined the offer that came, even if it meant never meeting absent members.

"This place gives me all the variety that I need in crafting the armor. Dragons are much more diverse than dwarves, humans, or the other regular races. Serpic-Moreal might satisfy me as a dwarf, but it would restrict my options in creating my armor. I don't believe that the dragons would appreciate the results of my work if I left here. How about you, Scorplin? Are going to move into Serpic-Moreal?"

"The offer is there, but I doubt that I will. While I definitely provided Borshik and his men with needed talents, I expect to return home and find numerous complaints from those that have come to expect my services. If Borshik needs me, he can place his request just as everyone else does. I have been to Serpic-Moreal, so can teleport there without any problems. I have also now been here."

Ninette spoke up, "I am telling Scorplin to teleport here, Hoduyyal, and not to my home."

He replied, "That is fine. Just, Scorplin, be careful before you step outside. If I am working with a dragon, make yourself at home and wait for me to finish." As the man nodded, Hoduyyal added, "By the way, Ninette, isn't it time for you to go home? Whatever preparation your father felt needed to be done has surely been finished."

"I was waiting for my brother to arrive."

"Ninette, it is time for you to start acting without needing to be prompted. If you are going to take a husband and start a family, you are the one that needs to lead."

"I still have a year."

"No, I have other things for you to do in this year, and that will require you take some initiative as well."

"Hoduyyal, you brought me to a church to Thaenir. I am supposed to persevere."

"That does not mean standing idle, young lady. You have things to do."

"But I really don't want to go home."

"At least you are now being honest. Take Scorplin, and escort him to your house."

"Yes, Hoduyyal."

"Good girl, and return here as often as you like. You know to consider this place your home as well."

Ninette turned to the other dwarves to say, "Alchort, Turlell, Morten, I promise to consider Serpic-Moreal home as well. You haven't seen the last of me."

The lady hugged the dwarves, then took the hand of Scorplin and led him out of the place. Hoduyyal fought to keep himself seated. He wanted to rise and see her away, but felt a need to keep his composure in front of the other distinguished guests in his presence.

"Well, new friends, now that you have claimed Serpic-Moreal, did you come here with plans of getting dragons of your own?"

Alchort returned, "No, but we did come because we had heard of you and your work with dragons. We also wanted to show our support of what effect you had on the life of Ninette. Finally, however, we simply saw you as a dwarf that had grown up in the area. If you don't mind, we would like to discuss our plans with you and see what advice you can give."

"For that, we need more beer."

The next installment will begin an entirely new story, "Into the Land of Immortals."
