She hugged me as she said, “And that man is his father, and my husband, Ferrigote. Do not fear, Neselle, as he has fought such battles many times before.”
I simply replied, “Well, it’s my job.”
Althery said, “No, Lady Neselle, this is not your job.”
Something within me caused me to make a declaration of a certain fact. “Yes, it is. You are my job. I was given to you. These boobs were placed on my body to please you, and they cannot come off. You are my job.” I almost cried as I said, “For the rest of my life, you are my job.”
Neselle finds out just how much her job might demand of her.

I looked to Althery to say, “I am not a fighter.”
“No, but I don’t think we are going where the horses will do us any good. I would thus like for you to come with us. There is a use for the horses, so I want you to assure that they are there for us.”
“Jericho seems to accept me.”
“Yes, he is a good horse. Just likes to play.” Althery’s hand did not move, and his face dropped its smile as he said, “Where we going is possibly very dangerous. If you have to leave, the horses can take you away just like they are going to take us into danger.” He went quiet for a moment, then added, “I know that asking this is going far beyond your actual job requirements.”
If only either of them knew the truth.

“And who are you to tell me my job?”
As I had hoped, the potentate had stopped to put his focus on me. I saw others watching, but no one was speaking advice or doing anything to give me clues about how to behave. Not having any other option, I just continued on the flow of whatever thoughts had come to my mind.
“Someone who just went through all the lessons to justify the rationale for the games. Someone who happened to get the sole human designation. Someone who then got the luck of being on assignment when these men came to our world. Someone who then was then given boobs making the men my sole occupation in life. Well, I’m here, and doing my job. GO AND DO YOURS!”
There is no reward for doing nothing.

Every time a new incident is reported around here, the strategy gets resurrected and reconsidered. We were more than prepared for the notice to put things into motion.” The human male looked to Althery and Nuchirg to say, “We have some weapons of our own. If you men hear the command to move back, you had better do so. A miss with some of the things we brought is actually more dangerous than a direct strike.”
Althery replied, “Well, we came expecting this to be our fight.”
“Understood, but this is our world, so we get to play as well.”
Sometimes those in the government just do not understand the desire of the people.

Alaner signaled a break while almost squealing with pleasure. She thanked me, thanked Althery, then rushed off to wherever she would edit the material. I caught the eyes of a number of those around me with my mother asking the next question.
“What made her so happy?”
“Yes,” I said slightly amazed, “as I only said one thing.”
One of the lions said, “It was obviously what she wanted you to say. We can have her show us the final report later.”
Not just the government can play politics.

Chorith saw me, and galloped over to say, “Those men are good. Whether they have what it takes to kill the pond beast, I cannot say. We of course have to first simply prove that it exists to be killed.”
“Do you think that you could do that?”
“Do what?”
I wrapped an arm around Chorith’s neck to softly inform him, “Mother told me to stay with those men. She said that the Goddess had set me on this mission as well. I could need a mount.”
The lads are not the only ones prepared for what might come.

Father showed no fear of facing the lady, even though she had removed the towels to return to working with her hair, as he said, “Well, Alaner, have you discussed the topic with your tiger father?”
“He says that there is enough humanity in the animals that you still think of yourselves as human.”
Sometimes it takes unusual circumstances to learn things that otherwise would not be taught.

A human male in Alaner’s entourage said, “There was talk of selling a special hunting license, but that was merely to get in more publicity.”
The wolf picked back up, “And that is all that should have happened at the worst.”
Alaner said, “It seems that things did get much worse.”
“Yes, the idiot government expected us to back down – as if we were in the wrong. That was not going to happen.”
The group begins to move toward the pond beast.

Nuchirg in one flowing move released his scabbard to have it drop on the floor. The blade reflected light as he spun it in his hand. He then turned and sent the metal deep into the paneled wall. He drew it out and I saw the dust of the actual granite blocks of the large building. Nuchirg said something that I really did not need Althery to translate.
“Our weapons are not toys. We came to kill your pond beast, and we have the weapons that can do it.”
Alaner whistled, then turned to the camera in the room to say in her usual style, “I believe these men do mean business.”
Alaner begins to grasp that what is happening is not simple entertainment.

Chapter Twenty-Two: A Good Beginning to the Days

I continued to access cameras as I replied. “No. What you are seeing is stupidity. I just played the game. I have just gone through years of learning about my world and the laws. This goes against everything I was taught.”
“Yes, life gets like that at times.”
I spun on Althery to put a finger pointing in his face as I declared, “No, it doesn’t. We have been at peace for over four hundred years. Why do you think that we play the game? Why do you think that people allow themselves to be turned into animals? Our lives do not get like that, and have not gotten like that for centuries.”
Everyone realizes that it is getting time to move on.
