We had a bit of confusion in our game recently, with some amusing results.

For a few years my husband had been Dming an on-again-off-again campaign consisting of two players – myself and another player, JH, who travels a great deal. We played once every couple of months on average, so we often needed recaps and reminders.

Well, there was an NPC bard in the party who JH and I were convinced was an elf – important because JH was playing an elven bladesinger.

In one gaming session, the DM said, “Why do you keep saying Halfmoon is an elf? He’s a human.”

JH & Me: Whaaaat?
DM: He’s a human.
Me: I thought he was an elf.
JH: Me, too.
DM: No, he’s a human.
Me: I really thought he was an elf. All this time I’ve been thinking that my dwarf was outnumbered!
JH: Yeah, all this time I’ve been protecting him.
DM (checking the module): Nope. Human. I don’t know where you got the idea he was an elf.

This went on for a few minutes until JH joked, in character, “Halfmoon! I thought you were an elf!”

DM as Halfmoon (miming removing fake ears): Oh, you mean these?

We laughed. But the confusion continued for over a year because we didn’t play very often, and we couldn't get it through our skulls. The DM kept having to remind us that he was a human, and JH and I kept saying, “Halfmoon! Take those fake ears off, dangit!”

Well, JH has moved back to town, and we’re preparing to pick up the campaign on a regular basis. My husband was reviewing the module the other day, and we heard him say:

“Oh ... Hmm ... I think I know where the confusion about Halfmoon started. In the text of the adventure, when you first meet him, it says he’s an elf. But on the NPC description sheet in the back it says he’s a human.”

JH & Me: Aha! So we weren’t crazy!

We haven’t resumed gameplay yet.

Maybe my husband will split the difference and make him a half-elf.

It seems that you have a running gag with a good history. I would thus leave it alone. When in doubt, one can usually figure most things out:
1) Does he have infravision?
2) Does the scenario have him discovering secret doors?
3) What is his hair and eye color?
4) What type of history does he have?

Still, remember that the purpose of a game is to have fun. The 'mistake' seems to help the fun, so leave it.

I think that he has been played without infravision.

In fact, I think that might have been where the issue first emerged, with the DM asking, "What are you using for light?" and us replying that we all have infravision, and the DM responding that Halfmoon doesn't.

He'll probably remain a human, since we've roleplayed so much about it. All kind of jokes about his hair covering his ears, fake elf ears, trying to market on the cachet of being an elven minstrel, etc.

Wyndeleth, that is one of the funniest things I have heard in a while about a roleplaying game.

[Edit]I was thinking about it, and I have decided that this is even better than the Obelisk Incident that a friend of mine had with his roleplaying group. It was pretty much a recap of the old Gazebo Story. Just the longevity of your situation as an inside running gag gives it another whole element of humor, and there's so many directions you could take it. Please, do keep us informed!

Hahahaha! That's so funny. It's stories like these that make me play the game.

Okay, another funny story, same group.

Our friend, as I mentioned before, had been travelling a lot, and there were old campaigns that we hadn't played in years.

We decided to pick up one of these old campaigns, but -- horror of horrors -- we can't find his character sheet.

Now, we're not the most organized people in the world, but every character does have its own folder with the character sheet, spellbook, maps, notes, drawings, etc.

We also have a couple of folders where we put loose miscellany that gets separated from folders, characters that were rolled up but never played or were only played once or twice, stuff like that.

So, we looked in the miscellaneous folders for the character -- with no luck.

However, we did find a mid-level character named "John Stone"in that player's handwriting ... and none of us have any idea who this character is! Maybe a henchman that was created right before our friend moved? We don't know.

We read the character sheet for clues, and none of it sounded familiar to any of us. I mean, this character has a CATAPULT, for pete's sake! Surely we would remember someone who had a catapult!

The real kicker is: on the back of the character sheet, in the little graph where you put miscellaneous info, the strangest thing is written ...

"Tollbooths Marvin"

WTF?

Tollbooths Marvin? None of us have any clue as to what THAT could mean.

I only know that, if I ever start a rock band, I'm calling it Tollbooths Marvin.

LoL
Sounds like my kinda band!

Would it be some depraved anti-toll-booth bandit dude d'ya think?
Perhaps his dad was shot for trying to run a toll booth...

Maybe need to give him several plusses versus toll booth guards on roads and bridges :¬)

Cool
